Test Drive ∞ May 2025
The First Collision
©
Jump ⇅ :: ArrivalPanoramaFringesInvite Request
The Diadem is an invite-only panfandom game set in a retro-futuristic world where uprooted souls find themselves deep within an eerie wasteland of roads and highways frequently assailed by cosmic storms. Three united strongholds keep the population. Its capital is Panorama, a large metropolis at the planet's center.

Soon, you realize you aren't alone. Calling themselves fluxdrifts, the "locals" have similar stories to you, either for themselves or their ancestry. You speak to an old woman who claims she hailed from another star. You meet a young man who says his great-great-grandfather knew a strange language everybody spoke "back home." As you explore, you stumble across a coin you recognize or your sister's locket. How did it get here? What does this mean? That's for you to discover.

But first, you need to find a ride.

No invites needed to play on the TDM. Everyone's welcome! Use the Invite Request thread below to request an invite from another player.

∞ Summary ∞
IC-wise, arrivals are scattered throughout the month. Events described on the TDM are also ongoing throughout the month. If you'd rather jump right into the action, you're free to begin in media res with your character having already been on the planet for several days.

Post-impact, characters will wake up in a med tent by the Scrapyard. From there, they must accept a vehicle on loan and make the 2-hour drive to the nearest city, Panorama. If they refuse the car because they don't want the loan, they'll be in debt for medical bills instead...so just take the car. It'll come in handy.

Some things to keep in mind when bringing in your character:

  • Pick an injury. At minimum, they got knocked out; at most, whatever they can recover from. Medicine is decently advanced so they'll heal faster if not painlessly.
  • Decide items kept. Reasonable items on their person only: photos, keys, clothes, costumes. No pets or animal companions. Wildly out-of-place tech and personal cell phones will be damaged beyond repair.
  • Select a weapon. Do this only if eligible. Guidelines about weapons and powers are on the FAQ.
  • Choose a vehicle. Decide whether your character gets 2-3 options or if they're stuck with something they hate. Players can pick directly from our collection or source their own images. Anything under a similar aesthetic will work. If your character needs accommodations for driving, they can have them. Ask us for details.
  • Get a phone. Characters have to obtain a phone (and a SIM card) themselves. If they've got one from home, it's damaged beyond repair. Phones are cheap. It'll only take a couple of weeks to afford one. You need to know the number before you text or call anyone. Read about phones and the Forum before you hop on it.

TDM threads can be canon if characters are accepted. Top-levels made to the TDM should be open to all.

Arrival & Introduction
Date: Throughout May
You've tumbled over a cliff. You were fighting for your life. You're on the cusp of death. You slipped in the shower. Whatever the catalyst, you struggle to cling to consciousness. As darkness overtakes you, a swirling vortex warps light and shadow in a way that defies all physics. A dark wail etches into your very bones. You couldn't describe it if you tried. You can barely comprehend what it is.

Then you open your eyes.

Through the figure's mask ©, you swear the face is grinning down at you. The tent you're in smells of antiseptic, and scratchy blankets line your cot. Injuries you've sustained have been bandaged. In the corner, you spot a MedBot that's fixed you up. Depending on the extent of your injuries, the doctor on duty might give you some painkillers before you go. Thankfully, your belongings are by the exit. Sorry if anything's damaged. Your landing was pretty rough.

You follow the figure outside. They are Yom Crook, here to lend a hand to fellow fluxdrifts like yourself. Their car's parked beside them. Actually, there are lots of cars around, but Yom Crook's stands out with its painted shark mouth. They explain they found you, unconscious, in a diffusion zone and brought you here. The nearest city is a 2-hour drive northeast. Forget about walking. You'll never make it. Also, you owe the doctor a lot of money for patching you up. But you're in luck: they've got some wheels for you and if you accept the vehicle on loan, Yom Crook will cover your medical bills. That's a good deal, right? It's not the shiniest car or motorcycle, but it'll do. If fortune favors, you'll get to choose between two or three options. Plus, if you need accommodations to drive—like adjustments to your seat height or modified controls—you'll receive all that for free.

Take the vehicle. (And the loan.) Yom Crook assures you that you'll have six months before collectors come around. Any time you're ready to pay a part of it down, return here to the Scrapyard. You'll get a receipt and everything. Paying off the loan in six months isn't impossible, but it will take a lot of work. Just don't get too lax. There's a good chance you'll be juggling multiple loans as you try to get by.

You either know how to drive, or you'll have a bare-bones manual to get you started. Road rules are more a suggestion than enforced, so just hit the pedal and go. The car has some basic features. The built-in compass will help you navigate.

OPTIONAL PROMPTS: a flat tire; a body on the road (is it a trap?); a fender bender

Panorama
Explore & Settle In
Conditions: Warm spring temperatures, light showers
After 2 hours on the road, you find civilization. The largest of the strongholds, Panorama is where the economy thrives. Massive power plants glowing red make it visible from a distance. The city is divided into three districts. For now, you can access the Pavilion and the Blocks. Don't worry about the Sanctum; they're not letting you in.

You only need to know two things about Panorama: 1) it's big, the size of a modern metropolis, and you'll need your car to get around; 2) anything goes as long as you don't pick a fight with the wrong person. Street smarts will get you far. Despite its geographical size, the population isn't huge. With roughly a million people in a city designed for over twice that number, Panorama is far from deserted, but nor is it overcrowded. It's a good thing. Resources are limited as it is.
The Pavilion: Free Samples
©
Like any large city, Panorama features a couple of supermarkets. The stock's not as consistent as a proper supermarket. On occasion, shelves can remain cleaned out for a week or two. Regardless, the long tradition of free samples remains. If you're not already shopping, you'll notice the crowded parking lot and clusters of lines inside.

Try samples, push through the crowds as you shop, or give yourself a five-finger discount. If you're cautious, you can pocket a few small items without consequences. The Pavillion doesn't have the infrastructure for surveillance; unless someone sees you, you won't be caught. Steal from the store or pilfer someone's wallet. Maybe you even make a new friend if you bump into another fluxdrift. Or, start a fight with somebody who cut you off in the cheese line. Don't make too much of a ruckus, or you'll be thrown out.

As you look around, you'll see posters advertising temporary positions for the cash register or graveyard shifts in the warehouse. Seems they might've lost several employees recently (how'd that happen?), which is good for you! It's just a 6-week position, but it'll get you on your feet. The city has temporary positions like this all over. Permanent ones are harder to come by when you're new.
Samples include: steamed cabbage dumplings, synthetic cherry juice, cheddar cheese, and chocolate-covered alien eggs (it's crunchy and weirdly tasty). They're served in the usual throwaway paper cups with little toothpicks.
The Blocks: Power Outage
©
Power's finicky in Panorama, especially in the Blocks. Saint Margery's Hospital, located in the same area, has priority for power so the first to go are the motels. Maybe you've been in your room for a couple of weeks, maybe you just got here—and by the way, every motel desk is happy to put the fee on your tab if you don't have the money upfront—but all the motels on the east side are in a blackout, leaving only the west side motels up and running.

What do you do? You have three choices:

  • Risk leaving your room and head to the other side where there's power. Knock on some doors and negotiate with another to share the room. They might shut the door in your face, ask for a favor in return, or be nice enough to help you with no strings attached. There's no guarantee your unattended room will be untouched, though, and you'll be on the hook for any damages an intruder causes.
  • Sit in the dark and deal. It's not the worst idea, but the TV's down, the vending machines are powered down, and with the entire place plunged into darkness, you risk getting robbed. If you struggle with defending yourself, you might want to find some trustworthy company. You can also sneak out of there and let them take your leftover pizza. It's not like you've got a ton of valuables, right? Plus, clobbering someone in the face with a frying pan sounds great until you realize you've gotta do something with the body. And what if this person's got a friend waiting?
  • Get in your car and drive (or grab a friend for a road trip). If you scroll the Forum, you might notice reports on diffusion zones southward. Besides, these motels are hardly your forever home. The city can only provide so much. Why not go for a ride and see what you can find out there?

OPTIONAL PROMPTS: clean up on aisle 3 (what is that goo?); a knock at your door but no one's there; you hear screaming or a commotion down the hall

The Fringes
Quad 3: Lockdown
Conditions: Stormy, with flooding roads
Felix Bjurstrom
> Date: 125-05-17
> Time: 02:15:57

> Emergency road lights have been reported in Quadrant 3! Please, can someone go see what's there? When last we chasers investigated emergency lights, a whole truck filled with sour candy had tipped over. Our stores were stocked for weeks! Oh, be careful - reception looks bad in that zone.
Whether you end up here on your own or you were following a tip on the Forum, the outcome is the same: you come to a stop in front of a 2-story office building that's flooded several inches deep. Emergency lights from a roadblock flicker through the stormy night. Stepping out of your car, you're soaked within seconds. When you check your phone, you don't have any bars. No calls in or out.

Through the open windows, a computer awakens and displays a cheerful smile. The lights inside switch on.

Pick your scenario role below. Your thread partner doesn't need to take the opposite role! They can join you in the same scenario (i.e. trapped together). Players are also free to create a generic NPC for the other side to facilitate the thread.

After characters escape, they'll find one bottle of antibiotics in their pocket or car, whether they remember taking it or not.

A: Sealed In
As you peer through the windows, you see crates of medicine floating around. Antibiotics in the diadem are valuable. Hospitals and doctors are always buying. You can keep it for yourself or make a quick buck. Or maybe you're compelled to help somebody back in the city who's in need. Whatever the reason, you decide to take the risk and step inside.

Water splashes around your ankles. The lock buzzes behind you. If you try to break the windows, you discover they're unnaturally resistant to shattering. With the whole place locked tight, the water begins to churn. Then the computer lights up again.

Warning, it flashes in large, bold text. Quarantine in progress. Release code required for exit.
  • To find the code, you'll have to search. Duck under the water, go through sopping envelopes and sticky notes or pick the locks on the filing cabinets and desk drawers. You can also try hacking the computers. Use your computer knowledge or fall back on the age-old trick of seeing who wrote down their password.
  • The files, notepads, and emails start innocuous, but as you look through them, disturbing phrases jump out at you—a dark thought you've had or a cruel taunt from someone in your past. The longer you're fixed on the terrible words, the higher the water begins to rise. Only another can break you out of your trance.
  • With the rising water comes fear. And the more you're afraid, the more the water also rises. You begin to see faces in the water, bobbing like balloon heads. Do you recognize them? If you move to take a closer look, they will sink back beneath the surface as if never there.
  • If you manage to swallow your panic, you can eventually find a triple-laminated binder with the release code and instructions. Bad news: you need someone on the outside to punch in the 6 strange symbols in order. The instructions explain that the code panel is located at the back of the building.
Let's hope a friendly face comes along.

B: Set Free
As you peer through the windows, you see not just the crates of medicine but someone trapped inside. They look like they might be in trouble, and from your vantage point, you notice that the water is bubbling strangely. It's definitely not normal rainwater. As you watch, the water rises unnaturally, stopping and starting. It's as if the water level is responding to an external stimulus.
  • The glass is soundproof. You can't hear what the person inside is saying, so you'll have to communicate with each other another way. Try charades, typing on your phone, or whatever you think of. Eventually, you determine that they're stuck and that you need to enter some sort of code onto a pad located—according to your trapped partner—at the back of the building.
  • Around the back, shadows swallow your surroundings. The panel must be pried open, but a slippery substance makes it hard to get a good grip. Each time the substance touches you, you grow uneasy. You swear you see eyes watching you, though when you turn around, nothing's there.
  • You can't seem to keep the instructions in your mind. And those symbols...they burn into your retinas. Through them, you glimpse an incomprehensibly massive figure unfurling in the darkness, pulsing as if in a deep sleep. When you snap back to reality, you realize you've injured yourself, slicing your hand on a sharp edge or a bruise you can't remember getting.
  • Once you manage to release the doors, the water inside the office drains upward into the sky as though sucked out by a giant hose. The darkness spreads. Get out of there fast before the shadows drag you or your partner into the void.
Of course, you don't have to help anyone. You can leave the individual there, make a deal, or outright extort them. But remember, you're not the only person on these roads. You might want to play your cards carefully, even if altruism isn't your first instinct.

The Road

The knock at the window is from a young man who waves at Rune when he gets his attention in a friendly sort of way. He has a bright blue motorcycle helmet on his head. He doesn't startle at the sudden sound of the horn. He's parked his motorcycle behind the car. He got into a few accidents so far on the road but it's only scuffed up his clothes a little bit.

"Hello!" He says through the window. "I saw you were pulled over and wanted to see if you were okay." The road he thinks is mostly safe but people don't pull over very often. He's been driving slower than everyone else so stayed to the side, but he's not super sure that stopping is a good idea. He might get in trouble if he's in someone's way or they could accidentally hit him.

"I wouldn't be much help if you weren't because I don't know how cars work, but I thought I could ask." Jack has driven twice in his life so he has no engineering experience but he would at the very least attempt. He does have electrical powers so he could give the car a jump if that's what he needed.

[This is fine with Nadine. He's not coming any closer, but he's not leaving her alone, either. It's appreciated. If he was going to make trouble, he already had plenty of opportunity to.]

I think the power grid gets overloaded. It's like a rolling blackout, it should come back on...at some point.

[Probably. She's just making a logical guess, based on what she knows of this place so far. Whatever, she's lived without power for months. A few hours to a night aren't that big a problem. She just needs to stay alert and be cautious.

Which makes her pause before answering the next question. He hasn't made any sort of threatening gesture or comment, and is keeping his distance. But a woman alone has to be careful.]

I'll be fine, but thank you. Kind of reminds me of home, actually. Just with more people.

[She's not going to announce that she's armed, but she's pretty sure she can shoot any serious threat in time. In her experience, that takes care of the threat pretty well.]

[he wouldn’t be the first person to have dined and dashed, if it came down to it.]

Cool. I’ll get your order in and out in a jiffy.

[Angel smiles, taking the sticky menu from him before heading back to punch his order in.

she gets held up by the person who took the cake before, seeming to go for another comically large sized slice, but a bigger burlier busser steps in to handle it.

seems like a regular.

Angel returns in a few, sliding over a chipped cup on a scuffed saucer, pouring him some coffee steaming hot from the carafe.

she also fishes out some packets of the aforementioned powder creamer from the front of her apron.

[ The longer Sunday spends driving, the more he realizes something: he's taken the transportation methods on Penacony and within the star systems for granted. Some of those might've been lengthy, but they certainly don't compare to having to drive what he feels are drawn out distances even if they barely qualify, though he's adjusting to it well enough. Mostly. It won't be long before his car only has some dents he's responsible for compared to the many it already possessed.

Sunday wouldn't go so far as to say he's used to the noises this car makes. It'll take time before though in time the tight grip he has on the steering wheel will (very) slowly lessen to be more of a (relatively) normal grip. A particularly suspicious sputter gets him to tense each time though the car continues rolling on. It'd help if he could find something to listen to on the radio to cover some of it up, but whatever stations there are prove too difficult to locate. Static isn't nearly as settling as music would be though he tries it for a few seconds before shutting the radio off with a grimace. What he wouldn't give to have any of the records from home.

It's worth one more try as he spins the dial to see if something will come in. The snippet of sound which comes through the speakers is so welcome it completely distracts him from paying attention to the road. Unfortunately for Sunday, the moment he takes his eyes away is the exact one where the car jolts and then abruptly swerves to one side. With clenched teeth he manages to regain control - not that it was very out of control to begin with - to coast it to a stop on the shoulder and turns the engine off.

In the silence, he heaves a weary sigh before getting out and then immediately presses his lips into a thin line of displeasure upon seeing the flat tire though he erases it by the time he looks to Adrian. ]

I think there was something in the manual warning about this. [ He even remembers the steps thanks to studying it to the point of almost memorization. A small furrow appears on his brow as Sunday glances towards the car's trunk next. ] Supposedly there's tools for this.

[ Knowing the steps is a lot different than knowing the process, as he's about to find out. ]

[ Even with giving Ken space and easing his expression further, the Vibes Are Off and continue to be off so Ken makes the assumption right away: this guy is a supernatural being. Something big. And considering his past run ins with the paranormal have been more unpleasant than anything that he ever imagined (the kid tried to ask to be abducted off of Earth from aliens because he was so lonely) he has ever right to be wary of having yet another entity apart of the occult.

His stance and expression is tense, another flicker of ghostly ember flickering from his body, but once John explains himself, he relaxes considerably.

[jyn, for her part, stays in the truck. doing so affords her certain advantages — namely height, which she doesn't have much of on her own. as long as she stays in here, whoever she's just hit, who'll inevitably stalk toward her at some point, won't be able to reach her.

it's likely that she'll get bored and want the opposite of that soon enough (her fists have been twitching for a fight since she'd been stopped shortly after she'd woken up), but for now, a little intimidation doesn't hurt.

(saw, she thinks, with an ache that's now more fond than resentful for the first time in years, would be proud.)

The wheelchair is notable for a multitude of reasons, but the most important one to Maria is sentimental. It brings her back to dear Saint Adeline. Her friend. Someone that she hadn't been able to save, slowly losing herself to madness. Maria can still remember her clearly, her malformed head and her weakening body strapped to that wheelchair.

This man is in much better condition, thankfully. No such experiments or blood ministrations...for now.

"I see."

But like Adeline, he is thinking of others despite his apparent lack of mobility. It pulls at her heart and, despite her inclinations to mind her own business, Maria knows that her is a given.

"Then we should work quickly." A pause, as she considers. "How deep is the flooding?"

Is he able to maneuver in the water?

That soon turned to a frown as he watched the scenes unfolding again. It was a relief that there was someone else around to nip that in the bud, but it got An Zhe's thoughts turning. This was not the Third Floor, but the late night clientele were really acting like it was. There was not much that An Zhe could physically do about it (he looked like the wind would blow him over), but... hmmm.

Sadly, the dodgy engine makes sense. Everything here is either old or just doesn't work properly.

[ And the kicker is they sell these things to people. Can't even give them anything brand new. Not that he thinks they will, given how they're saddling them with loans and the like.

Returning to his bike, he pulls out an old tool box that has some basic equipment he scavenged or thrifted during his time here. They're not much, but they get the job done, at least. When he stops just before her bike, he gives it a once-over and crouches down, putting the box beside him so he can look through some tools. He's busy with this task when he answers her question. ]

[ Forced to read lips, Maria can make a guess as to what he's saying. She offers a small, if somewhat bemused smile in response: her concern isn't for her own safety, clearly.

Maria moves to the far edge of the glass to see if she can what seems to be moving about them. A beast? Or the shadows merely playing tricks on their minds? The latter seems more plausible now. She nods, encouraging if he's found something of interest.

[ There are faces in the water, waiting for him to join them, as he should have long ago.

Motion catches his attention and Adrian looks up, blinking as if he's just come out of a daze. He'd stayed by the window, but he had been lost in reverie between one visit and the next, staring down into the depths of the rising water.

The darkness poses no impediment to his sight; he can see that the man is hurt. Who or what could be responsible? He searches the darkness behind his would-be rescuer, and then his face, as if taking inventory of the new marks. A question for another time, he supposes, if he doesn't end up drowned regardless of the man's valiant efforts. The water is nearly halfway up his chest already, and still rising. He'd barely noticed.

He curses under his breath, holds up a finger to ask the man to wait, then dives under to retrieve the binder that had fallen out of his hands, dragged off by some unknown current. When he resurfaces, coughing for breath, he holds it up against the window, doing the best he can to press it against the glass without letting it slip.

There's little time left. All of that magic, all of that sacrifice, and for what? To put this man in harm's way because of his own foolishness?

Adrian swallows the panic and guilt in his chest, schools his expression. When he removes the binder from the glass, he presses his gloved hand against it. ]

There are many more where they come from, I'm afraid. This area doesn't have the highest caliber of people.

[ Not that Charles can necessarily blame them or be overly judgmental. It is not his way. He is new to this place and he can see how people have more or less been broken down into their worst selves. That's part of the problem of being infested with too many voices right then. He understands the logic behind them, albeit without too much sympathy for people who planned on hurting both of them. He wonders at the rich part of town and how little they may care.

Charles shakes her hand lightly before letting it go, shaking his head as well at the question. ]

I am far more likely to accidentally stab myself than someone else.

[ He lived with the certainty that he could handle any situation he needed to, so he never trained at learning other skills. Perhaps that was arrogant of him. It wouldn't hurt to learn but at this point he thinks it unlikely. And he's telling the truth. He is not what one would call graceful with anything, let alone a blade. ]

I'm a stuffy professor by day, stuffier professor by night.

[ He has a wry kind of humor and no stranger to mocking himself when it seems relevant. ]

Though Rowena was walking through the hospital, keeping her form closer to the walls and shadows to remain hidden. As hidden as a woman can be in a public space when there are others around, anyway, but she's using her size to her advantage. And her magic. Not being there in physical form, having astral projected from her motel room, makes it easier to slip around unseen.

It's recon with Rowena trying to see what the situation is without being drawn into anything, particularly if she or Jack ever needed anything. It was a strange idea with their powers but something could always be useful. Or as an ingredient.

Except that a strange sensation touching her mind makes her pause. She's not psychic but the spell carries an element of it with the projection of her spiritual self, though she's usually only ever communicated with someone purposely, never having anything touching her before. Though the emotion that she feels tells her it's a person behind it and--

"Do you introduce yourself with pain instead of words often?"

Arthur could protest that there's nothing wrong with scavenging for bin food. He's done it plenty. Needs must when the devil drives and all of that.

But what the man says next gives him pause and he decides defending dumpster diving isn't the right line to pursue at the moment.

He's not against breaking rules. He has broken more rules than he can count. It's the getting caught, the being seen while doing it. The risk of punishment - swift and brutal in Wellington Wells - is enough to make him resist the idea of committing a terrible social faux pax in public view.

But if they could somehow avoid being spotted....well, that's a metaphorical horse of a different color! His curiosity is piqued.

"Then I'd say that's a trick I'd very much like to know. How?"

Stopping probably wasn’t the best of ideas, in hindsight. Although driving probably isn’t the greatest of ideas either. Rune’s in a bit of a predicament, and it’s far from the first time he’s found himself facing one, but usually…

Well. Usually he had Brand. No. He’s always had Brand. Waking up here without him?

He recognizes that he’s probably in shock. That there are probably a number of other words that adequately describe the emotions Rune is feeling right now as well. But he also recognizes that if he doesn’t at least minimally get his shit together then he’s going to get himself killed, or worse.

“Uh, hi,” he manages. Through the glass of the window, which in retrospect is not terribly friendly of him, considering this kid did pull over to check that he was alright.

He blinks.

“Shit, sorry, here.” Reaching out, he tugs the door open, which is at least somewhat more polite (in his mind) than rolling down the window. His bad arm, currently strapped to his chest in the sling the doctors made for him, is probably easier to see this way too. “I, uh. Have been better, but that’s not really the car’s fault.”

[Dear God, the uniform IS bad. Poor girl. Lord have mercy upon the souls of our poor customer service workers.

The ill-fitting uniform aside, though. When Alisaie approaches and several cheeses get caught in the crossfire, Lawrence takes a step back to give her some room to steady the survivors. In the meantime, he goes on a whole face journey: his expression shifts from embarrassment (oh no, he was trying to be nonchalant but was caught Being Chalant) to great relief, as if Alisaie was the first person to have done anything nice for him in his life.
]

That's kind of you, thank you, miss. [He only takes one square of cheese, even if he kind of wanted to take two. Don't make any more of a fool of yourself, old man. As for the egg, if Alisaie's gone out of her way for him, he may as well be honest--]

Well, I've tried one already, actually. I would hate to see this piece go to waste. [lowering his voice just a smidge:] The flavor is all right, but I'm somewhat out of my depth with the texture. [He smiles. There is a little bit of mischief in it.] Also, I won't tell if you break the rules a little. Haven't you already?

[ Scott guesses it's a Wolverine thing not to accept polite hands offered to them so he just retracts his. The difference here, though, is that he's not quite as annoyed compared when it happened to Logan. The recognition is enough for him to keep his smile, even if it wanes just a little, because the way she knows his mutant name means she's from his world, one way or another. He still needs to know for sure, though. ]

That's right.

[ There's pride in his tone. His mutant name carries the weight of being the leader of the X-Men. Something that he'll always be proud of no matter what. ]

What's yours? [ Can be her name or her mutant name if she has one. ]

[ Driving is nothing like riding a horse or steering a wagon, but Adrian is slowly coming around to it. Emphasis on slowly. His own vehicle trails after Sunday's, moving at a speed that would only barely surpass foot traffic, if there was any. He's read the manuals. He knows he ought to be using the buttons for lights or signals or what have you, but he's down one useful hand and a bit nervous to take his eyes off the road, for fear of losing Sunday up ahead, if not worse.

Lucky thing; he can't miss Sunday veering off the road ahead. Adrian isn't far behind — the slow speed makes it easy enough to roll to a stop and get out. He jogs over with his traveling cloak barely pulled over his shoulders. It's difficult to work he clasp with one arm in a sling. ]

You're unharmed? [ He confirms, though he's fairly certain that's the case. He follows Sunday's gaze to the trunk. ] It can't be that difficult, can it? This sort of thing must happen often..?

Nor I.

[ Maria's pride will not stop her from admitting that herself (what pride she has left to protect). In her day, the greatest technological advancements had been in medicine and in weaponry, but transportation was still done by horse and carriage. For a vehicle to be powered by itself is truly an innovation.

But there is some comfort in the knowledge she isn't alone in this, even if the other involved is someone she is inherently suspicious of.

Maria dares a step closer, moving her gaze from the strange woman to her chosen machine. ]

( he appreciates this, being able to have a conversation to focus on. gustave has never done to well lingering in his own feelings, but—keeping busy? bouncing off of others, intellectually and otherwise? it heals something lonely and broken inside him. )

In mine, we created many different kinds of transportation vehicles. Nothing—ever—like this.

( he motions at that car, and now, finally, places his mechanical arm on his knee and pushes himself up to stand, presenting her with the keys he's been given along with the car. )

Oui. Were you given such a chariot, too? ( he raises a brow— ) I see you've found yourself a set of tools.
