TEST DRIVE ∞ May 2025

Test Drive ∞ May 2025
The First Collision
©
Jump ⇅ :: ArrivalPanoramaFringesInvite Request
The Diadem is an invite-only panfandom game set in a retro-futuristic world where uprooted souls find themselves deep within an eerie wasteland of roads and highways frequently assailed by cosmic storms. Three united strongholds keep the population. Its capital is Panorama, a large metropolis at the planet's center.

Soon, you realize you aren't alone. Calling themselves fluxdrifts, the "locals" have similar stories to you, either for themselves or their ancestry. You speak to an old woman who claims she hailed from another star. You meet a young man who says his great-great-grandfather knew a strange language everybody spoke "back home." As you explore, you stumble across a coin you recognize or your sister's locket. How did it get here? What does this mean? That's for you to discover.

But first, you need to find a ride.

No invites needed to play on the TDM. Everyone's welcome! Use the Invite Request thread below to request an invite from another player.

∞ Summary ∞
IC-wise, arrivals are scattered throughout the month. Events described on the TDM are also ongoing throughout the month. If you'd rather jump right into the action, you're free to begin in media res with your character having already been on the planet for several days.

Post-impact, characters will wake up in a med tent by the Scrapyard. From there, they must accept a vehicle on loan and make the 2-hour drive to the nearest city, Panorama. If they refuse the car because they don't want the loan, they'll be in debt for medical bills instead...so just take the car. It'll come in handy.

Some things to keep in mind when bringing in your character:

  • Pick an injury. At minimum, they got knocked out; at most, whatever they can recover from. Medicine is decently advanced so they'll heal faster if not painlessly.
  • Decide items kept. Reasonable items on their person only: photos, keys, clothes, costumes. No pets or animal companions. Wildly out-of-place tech and personal cell phones will be damaged beyond repair.
  • Select a weapon. Do this only if eligible. Guidelines about weapons and powers are on the FAQ.
  • Choose a vehicle. Decide whether your character gets 2-3 options or if they're stuck with something they hate. Players can pick directly from our collection or source their own images. Anything under a similar aesthetic will work. If your character needs accommodations for driving, they can have them. Ask us for details.
  • Get a phone. Characters have to obtain a phone (and a SIM card) themselves. If they've got one from home, it's damaged beyond repair. Phones are cheap. It'll only take a couple of weeks to afford one. You need to know the number before you text or call anyone. Read about phones and the Forum before you hop on it.

TDM threads can be canon if characters are accepted. Top-levels made to the TDM should be open to all.

Arrival & Introduction
Date: Throughout May
You've tumbled over a cliff. You were fighting for your life. You're on the cusp of death. You slipped in the shower. Whatever the catalyst, you struggle to cling to consciousness. As darkness overtakes you, a swirling vortex warps light and shadow in a way that defies all physics. A dark wail etches into your very bones. You couldn't describe it if you tried. You can barely comprehend what it is.

Then you open your eyes.

Through the figure's mask ©, you swear the face is grinning down at you. The tent you're in smells of antiseptic, and scratchy blankets line your cot. Injuries you've sustained have been bandaged. In the corner, you spot a MedBot that's fixed you up. Depending on the extent of your injuries, the doctor on duty might give you some painkillers before you go. Thankfully, your belongings are by the exit. Sorry if anything's damaged. Your landing was pretty rough.

You follow the figure outside. They are Yom Crook, here to lend a hand to fellow fluxdrifts like yourself. Their car's parked beside them. Actually, there are lots of cars around, but Yom Crook's stands out with its painted shark mouth. They explain they found you, unconscious, in a diffusion zone and brought you here. The nearest city is a 2-hour drive northeast. Forget about walking. You'll never make it. Also, you owe the doctor a lot of money for patching you up. But you're in luck: they've got some wheels for you and if you accept the vehicle on loan, Yom Crook will cover your medical bills. That's a good deal, right? It's not the shiniest car or motorcycle, but it'll do. If fortune favors, you'll get to choose between two or three options. Plus, if you need accommodations to drive—like adjustments to your seat height or modified controls—you'll receive all that for free.

Take the vehicle. (And the loan.) Yom Crook assures you that you'll have six months before collectors come around. Any time you're ready to pay a part of it down, return here to the Scrapyard. You'll get a receipt and everything. Paying off the loan in six months isn't impossible, but it will take a lot of work. Just don't get too lax. There's a good chance you'll be juggling multiple loans as you try to get by.

You either know how to drive, or you'll have a bare-bones manual to get you started. Road rules are more a suggestion than enforced, so just hit the pedal and go. The car has some basic features. The built-in compass will help you navigate.

OPTIONAL PROMPTS: a flat tire; a body on the road (is it a trap?); a fender bender

Panorama
Explore & Settle In
Conditions: Warm spring temperatures, light showers
After 2 hours on the road, you find civilization. The largest of the strongholds, Panorama is where the economy thrives. Massive power plants glowing red make it visible from a distance. The city is divided into three districts. For now, you can access the Pavilion and the Blocks. Don't worry about the Sanctum; they're not letting you in.

You only need to know two things about Panorama: 1) it's big, the size of a modern metropolis, and you'll need your car to get around; 2) anything goes as long as you don't pick a fight with the wrong person. Street smarts will get you far. Despite its geographical size, the population isn't huge. With roughly a million people in a city designed for over twice that number, Panorama is far from deserted, but nor is it overcrowded. It's a good thing. Resources are limited as it is.
The Pavilion: Free Samples
©
Like any large city, Panorama features a couple of supermarkets. The stock's not as consistent as a proper supermarket. On occasion, shelves can remain cleaned out for a week or two. Regardless, the long tradition of free samples remains. If you're not already shopping, you'll notice the crowded parking lot and clusters of lines inside.

Try samples, push through the crowds as you shop, or give yourself a five-finger discount. If you're cautious, you can pocket a few small items without consequences. The Pavillion doesn't have the infrastructure for surveillance; unless someone sees you, you won't be caught. Steal from the store or pilfer someone's wallet. Maybe you even make a new friend if you bump into another fluxdrift. Or, start a fight with somebody who cut you off in the cheese line. Don't make too much of a ruckus, or you'll be thrown out.

As you look around, you'll see posters advertising temporary positions for the cash register or graveyard shifts in the warehouse. Seems they might've lost several employees recently (how'd that happen?), which is good for you! It's just a 6-week position, but it'll get you on your feet. The city has temporary positions like this all over. Permanent ones are harder to come by when you're new.
Samples include: steamed cabbage dumplings, synthetic cherry juice, cheddar cheese, and chocolate-covered alien eggs (it's crunchy and weirdly tasty). They're served in the usual throwaway paper cups with little toothpicks.
The Blocks: Power Outage
©
Power's finicky in Panorama, especially in the Blocks. Saint Margery's Hospital, located in the same area, has priority for power so the first to go are the motels. Maybe you've been in your room for a couple of weeks, maybe you just got here—and by the way, every motel desk is happy to put the fee on your tab if you don't have the money upfront—but all the motels on the east side are in a blackout, leaving only the west side motels up and running.

What do you do? You have three choices:

  • Risk leaving your room and head to the other side where there's power. Knock on some doors and negotiate with another to share the room. They might shut the door in your face, ask for a favor in return, or be nice enough to help you with no strings attached. There's no guarantee your unattended room will be untouched, though, and you'll be on the hook for any damages an intruder causes.
  • Sit in the dark and deal. It's not the worst idea, but the TV's down, the vending machines are powered down, and with the entire place plunged into darkness, you risk getting robbed. If you struggle with defending yourself, you might want to find some trustworthy company. You can also sneak out of there and let them take your leftover pizza. It's not like you've got a ton of valuables, right? Plus, clobbering someone in the face with a frying pan sounds great until you realize you've gotta do something with the body. And what if this person's got a friend waiting?
  • Get in your car and drive (or grab a friend for a road trip). If you scroll the Forum, you might notice reports on diffusion zones southward. Besides, these motels are hardly your forever home. The city can only provide so much. Why not go for a ride and see what you can find out there?

OPTIONAL PROMPTS: clean up on aisle 3 (what is that goo?); a knock at your door but no one's there; you hear screaming or a commotion down the hall

The Fringes
Quad 3: Lockdown
Conditions: Stormy, with flooding roads
Felix Bjurstrom
> Date: 125-05-17
> Time: 02:15:57

> Emergency road lights have been reported in Quadrant 3! Please, can someone go see what's there? When last we chasers investigated emergency lights, a whole truck filled with sour candy had tipped over. Our stores were stocked for weeks! Oh, be careful - reception looks bad in that zone.
Whether you end up here on your own or you were following a tip on the Forum, the outcome is the same: you come to a stop in front of a 2-story office building that's flooded several inches deep. Emergency lights from a roadblock flicker through the stormy night. Stepping out of your car, you're soaked within seconds. When you check your phone, you don't have any bars. No calls in or out.

Through the open windows, a computer awakens and displays a cheerful smile. The lights inside switch on.

Pick your scenario role below. Your thread partner doesn't need to take the opposite role! They can join you in the same scenario (i.e. trapped together). Players are also free to create a generic NPC for the other side to facilitate the thread.

After characters escape, they'll find one bottle of antibiotics in their pocket or car, whether they remember taking it or not.

A: Sealed In
As you peer through the windows, you see crates of medicine floating around. Antibiotics in the diadem are valuable. Hospitals and doctors are always buying. You can keep it for yourself or make a quick buck. Or maybe you're compelled to help somebody back in the city who's in need. Whatever the reason, you decide to take the risk and step inside.

Water splashes around your ankles. The lock buzzes behind you. If you try to break the windows, you discover they're unnaturally resistant to shattering. With the whole place locked tight, the water begins to churn. Then the computer lights up again.

Warning, it flashes in large, bold text. Quarantine in progress. Release code required for exit.
  • To find the code, you'll have to search. Duck under the water, go through sopping envelopes and sticky notes or pick the locks on the filing cabinets and desk drawers. You can also try hacking the computers. Use your computer knowledge or fall back on the age-old trick of seeing who wrote down their password.
  • The files, notepads, and emails start innocuous, but as you look through them, disturbing phrases jump out at you—a dark thought you've had or a cruel taunt from someone in your past. The longer you're fixed on the terrible words, the higher the water begins to rise. Only another can break you out of your trance.
  • With the rising water comes fear. And the more you're afraid, the more the water also rises. You begin to see faces in the water, bobbing like balloon heads. Do you recognize them? If you move to take a closer look, they will sink back beneath the surface as if never there.
  • If you manage to swallow your panic, you can eventually find a triple-laminated binder with the release code and instructions. Bad news: you need someone on the outside to punch in the 6 strange symbols in order. The instructions explain that the code panel is located at the back of the building.
Let's hope a friendly face comes along.

B: Set Free
As you peer through the windows, you see not just the crates of medicine but someone trapped inside. They look like they might be in trouble, and from your vantage point, you notice that the water is bubbling strangely. It's definitely not normal rainwater. As you watch, the water rises unnaturally, stopping and starting. It's as if the water level is responding to an external stimulus.
  • The glass is soundproof. You can't hear what the person inside is saying, so you'll have to communicate with each other another way. Try charades, typing on your phone, or whatever you think of. Eventually, you determine that they're stuck and that you need to enter some sort of code onto a pad located—according to your trapped partner—at the back of the building.
  • Around the back, shadows swallow your surroundings. The panel must be pried open, but a slippery substance makes it hard to get a good grip. Each time the substance touches you, you grow uneasy. You swear you see eyes watching you, though when you turn around, nothing's there.
  • You can't seem to keep the instructions in your mind. And those symbols...they burn into your retinas. Through them, you glimpse an incomprehensibly massive figure unfurling in the darkness, pulsing as if in a deep sleep. When you snap back to reality, you realize you've injured yourself, slicing your hand on a sharp edge or a bruise you can't remember getting.
  • Once you manage to release the doors, the water inside the office drains upward into the sky as though sucked out by a giant hose. The darkness spreads. Get out of there fast before the shadows drag you or your partner into the void.
Of course, you don't have to help anyone. You can leave the individual there, make a deal, or outright extort them. But remember, you're not the only person on these roads. You might want to play your cards carefully, even if altruism isn't your first instinct.

( Jack has never ridden a motorcycle before but he is determined to try one now that he has the chance. He knows how to drive a car (poorly) and maybe he should be practical and take one of those, but the motorcycle just seems so exciting and he'll never get the chance again. His fathers aren't here to stop him. Jack is watching Vi driving and stopping, wondering if she too is doing this for the first time. It seems like a strange thing to do for an expert, but he's learning by observing.

When she talks to him his eyes widen a little and he shakes his head. He points to the side where the one of his choice is, although he hasn't touched it yet. He has a blue helmet in his hands and he puts it on his head. He wouldn't be so reckless as to drive without one, especially not with his inexperience.)

I'm not sure how to drive one so I was observing. You looked like you were figuring it out better than I could.

(Jack's both hesitant and confident, a weird blend coming from the ability to take a lot of damage without blinking, and also knowing that he's just asking for trouble trying something he has no experience with. Still, Vi's sort of proving exactly what he thought when he decided on a motorcycle.)

You look cool.

sighs in oh look it's marc's favourite topic

[personal profile] vestments 2025-05-19 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
( it's a very usual conversation for marc, and though he knows his usual approach to conversational topics leans towards less pleasant or, at best, more off-kilter, than how most people lean, he's never been able to adjust himself for any length of time. steven's better at it — easy, charming, sophisticated, and while jake's rougher, he's affable. roguish. unafraid of showing how much he gives a shit.

it makes a difference, and he's never been able to fathom why anyone would choose him if the other two were options. he wouldn't. marlene hadn't, not for a long while, not until marc was forced into honesty and steven's appearances grew less frequent.

he thinks the only person who had — until greer, until reese, until soldier — was jean-paul, and even he'd been driven away by marc's inability to be better, it'd just taken longer than most.

but she uses that word again — special — and marc looks to her, mentally skipping past the maybe-teasing of it all to wonder if there's a why to it. she didn't ask if she thought he was better than here, just too special. a quiet part of him says it's because it's not hard to guess that there aren't many places that marc's better than. )

I've died before, ( he states, bluntly. it serves as a response to both the question and her own remark on death, on dying. on it being preferable. it's not a self-pitying remark, it's not doubtful, but it is quiet and firm, certain. it's not 'nearly died', not 'had near death experiences', it's have.

at times, marc's treated it with a levity he's never genuinely felt — "it was boring" — purely to create an impression. moon knight. the man that doesn't stay dead. won't stay dead. the rest of the time, when he's him and not moon knight, he wonders what it's done to him — not the parts of him that belong to khonshu now, but the parts of him that had him reciting the shema before dying for what he'd expected to be the final time. the parts of him that keep ben grimm's annual hanukkah cards.

probably hasn't turned him into anything uglier, but it certainly hasn't made him better. he'd thought he wanted it the first time, but then he'd sold himself out, turned his back on his faith and his people and everything that'd ever tried to make him good. )
Death isn't the problem, it's the dying.

( he pausing, flexing a hand before balling it up into a fist. it's not quite fidgeting, marc would claim he doesn't do that, but he does do uncomfortable. anywhere else, and he'd probably pace, but he doesn't have the option for it, not without looking as if he's walking away from her, and so— )

And unfortunately you've got to go through that before you get to being dead. ( a glance, not quite sharp, but searching. ) Living's harder, and pain's the trade-off. But it's about taking those scars and turning them into something else. A tool. A weapon.

[ It likely doesn't help that Adrian's eyes reflect the light shined into them, like a cat, and he squints as his vision adjusts. The word 'vampire' clearly gets his attention, but he shakes his head quickly at the question and turns a pleading look on the stranger. He can understand the trepidation, and what this must look like.

Thankfully, the man relents for the moment, and Adrian mostly just holds the door and locks it again when they're through. He'd have been glad to help, but it's seemingly unneeded — the man is strong. A fighter of some kind, perhaps? Or a smith? He'd have to get a good look at his hands to know for sure.

The man is in front of him again before he can cross over to the bedside table to retrieve his gloves and other equipment. Adrian holds both hands up in a placating gesture, though he's careful to maintain the space between them. ]

I think so, yes, but I'd like to stabilize him all the same. I'm a healer. He collapsed at my door... head trauma, I suspect. [ He nods toward the next room, where the crashes have become louder. ] Are you able to move something in front of the door?

[ A pause. ] ...If you're familiar with vampires, then I understand your hesitance, but I'm no friend of Strahd or his foul kind. If you have some means of testing my assurance, I will submit to it, but I can give you only my word. I am Adrian Silverleaf, of Waterdeep.

[ He's half-braced for some demand of proof or payment. Even before this place, Barovia had taught him to expect that... but in another world, things might be different. This stranger might yet be a friend. ]

For now. [she takes his accusatory tone in stride, like she's dealt with the bristly sort of guy before.] I wouldn't dream of asking you for your pants.

Don't think you're my size.

[the big metal arm also doesn't phase her. people with cybernetic enhancements, or people missing body parts and replacing them with metal prosthetics are relatively commonplace. maybe not in a rinky dink place like Ohmtown, but in larger cities. and she's been touring around seeing all sorts as of recently.]

Besides... [her attention turns back to the Camaro.] once I get this baby running and figure out the heating situation, I think I'll be good.

[he doesn't believe her. and it's not as if she'd really been expecting him to, through the memory loss or whatever this is — it's something that would be hard to believe without having the experience of being there — but a kneejerk reaction doesn't know that. a sting of hurt moves through her again, and her still remaining grip on the wheel tightens, just so it has somewhere to release.

there's a defense sitting on the tip of her tongue, just waiting to be flung his way. if you're not going to believe me anyway, then why would i bother telling you? it's a weapon that wouldn't be hard to use; she's done it hundreds of times, more, in her life.

it's a weapon that wouldn't be hard to use — against anyone else. against someone she doesn't owe something to.

as it stands, jyn forces herself to swallow it down. it doesn't go down easily, but it goes down all the same. she's trying; she's really trying.

Adventurer. Now that's a nice word for it.

[HIS LIFE HAS NOT FELT LIKE AN ADVENTURE... But that's neither here nor there. It's not a wrong assessment, what with his Expedition uniform (worn, seen better days) looking suited to an environment like this one. Made for travel, made to last — and last it has.]

I come from a place, while certainly more colorful than this one appears, that is just as dangerous in its own way. And I chose to mostly live alone. You pick up something of a grizzled ambiance over the years.

That means, though, if you ever need someone with a sword and some battle experience? You can call on me.

I think the idea is that if we pay off the loan, we own the vehicle, so we can do anything we want to it.

[ It's strange to think that they will eventually own something themselves in this land, it's very permanent and Jack doesn't want to be here permanently, he has too much important back home. But it also would be great to own a motorcycle! It's as exciting as driving one. He doesn't know how long it will take to pay it off though. Maybe they will charge a painting fee if they do alter it. He likes the smaller car but it doesn't seem like it would last the road out there. ]

I think a lot, maybe. I've been in another universe before but it was just a parallel one to my own. This is completely new, it's nothing like that.

[ He's glad for it though because the Apocalypse world was a tragic and rundown place. Even the city they eventually go to here will be far better than what it was before, with most of humanity gone and no semblance of culture or life really left anymore. Jack would be thrilled with something so different and exciting if it wasn't for the timing and confusion. There was a time when he wanted anything other than his world.

He would try to create a portal again but with his luck he'd end up hurting people in the process. They'd accidentally end up somewhere worse. So he'll just figure out next steps later. ]

Mostly it's about knowing when to brake and stop the car before you hit someone, and keeping an eye on the road in front of you. It's all about not hitting things, actually.

[ The other rules of the car she'll get to know, but that's the key part of driving. Jack thought very seriously about it when he was behind the wheel. He feels like a motorcycle will make that easier he can swerve around people. ]

[Angel hasn't exactly been in this place all that long, but she's used to the song and dance of taking a long road trip across deserted and desolate lands. that's just the basic landscape of where she's from. so one second you're alone, with nobody but you, your car, and your thoughts to keep you company, and the next second some fellow drifter stops by to either offer a helping hand or make trouble.

with this guy, she can tell it's the former.

she had been laying down on the hood of her car when this stranger's car pulls over, and she props herself up on her good arm to get a look at him. the music dies down and transitions onto the next track. it's one of her own songs, a bit less loud and raucous and easier to talk over.
]

In a way I am stranded, but my car is working just fine. [in reference to this whole strange scenario she's found herself in. she's stuck in debt, stuck in a world completely new and foreign to her, stuck without friends or familiar faces.

but free enough to move around.

Jack also handed it over as if it weighed nothing. It doesn't occur to him that it's strange because he didn't know what it was in the first place. Something is different about the man in the nice suit too, he just doesn't know what. It doesn't strike him as bad, just odd. It could be because he's so dapper when no one else is. Maybe he's out of time.

"From the medics? Yes I can see why they'd be worried about your hand, it might not be easy to drive." Jack glances down at his foot, but Laszlo doesn't seem like he's concerned if it dropped on him, so it probably is fine. He seems very cam about having cut off fingers. That would bother Jack more. He must be brave.

"So they're not always like that?"

( and his voice is clear, too, tinged with anger, as he deflects the stranger's blade with his own before it connects with the man. the angle is poor for gustave, and that much causes the blade to slice at his forearm—nothing too deep, but enough to draw blood and sting.

still, he doesn't act in anger to the stranger because of it. )

They're children! ( in the dark, it really is hard to tell, but gustave has a feeling about this; not that they're literal children, but they're young, perhaps a little bit older than maelle—with so many years to live.

he reasserts, sternly. )
We don't kill them.

( the sight of blood plus all the mishaps of their attempt to take on both verso and gustave have the three assailants cower, fear in their faces at the blood, and turning tail, picking after each other.

gustave breathes himself down from his ire, his eyes not leaving the man. unbothered by his bleeding arm.

he doesn't dismiss his sword. )

( gustave moves now, from the window over, towards the passenger door because, admittedly, he finds interest in this enough to take what he can get. he doesn't close the door—unfamiliar to the action—but is sat in time for sunday to go on, explaining what he does know.

ignition, speed, direction. sister.

he smiles softly. )

A good habit in this case. I don't mind.

( because gustave is very intelligent, even if he doesn't seem it, and he gathers information and stores it in his mind with great accuracy. )

—so, this wheel is for directions, I take it. How do we affect the speed?

( he certainly expected her scythe, but her cards are just as good, especially when she manages to imbue them with her own spellcasting. gustave worries not for her actions, knowing sciel won't miss, and instead focuses on the third man who charges at him.

with an easy swing of his sword, gustave manages to stun the man with a heavy blow from the flat side of his blade. it hurts so much more than sciel's shattering cards, and the man, the leader, falls onto his back, stunned. when he doesn't respond, the other two glance up at gustave, then sciel, then back at gustave and his sword.

all gustave does is offer a crooked smile, raising his arms in a shrug.

it takes no time at all for the three to abscond, the two on their feet dragging their 'boss' away, shouting insult to both expeditioners. gustave dismisses his sword, turning towards sciel. )

...you know, I had it all under control.

( (he is barely able to keep under control the urge to rush to her and embrace her.) )

It... certainly might.

( gustave says with a pause, a glance down at his arm, and a short laugh. flexing his left hand, he doesn't feel anything at all from it, no nerve ends to connect to it, but he knows the motion and feels it in the way he imagines it happening.

he glances back at the man. )

It never was a problem back where I am from. Things are different here.

( so different, from lumiere.

quirking his lips into a smile, he offers his (right) hand for a shake. )

I owe you one. I'm Gustave.

( gustave can tell that this teenager is dead serious. reminds him of maelle, truth be told, and part of him wonders how come the situation has attracted a teenager, just not the one he's been looking for.

that being said, the words are incendiary enough for the thugs, and gustave just looks up for a moment wondering why... yet figuring that there's no getting out of this with just words. especially when the thugs approach the boy, with intention to intimidate and hurt.

unable to just stand here and let it happen, gustave hurries forward, grabs at one of the hoodies, and pulls, now shoving the guy away. he stands now between the three and, more important, them and the boy.

suppose he now has done something to deserve their ire. )

Gentlemen, ( !!! ) my arm is my arm, and I will not give it up. Either accept that, or we'll have a problem.

( gustave takes the hand without hesitation; he usually has a good take on people based on what feeling they give him, and he thinks faking all this enthusiasm and friendliness isn't entirely something someone could easily do.

so, up he goes— )

The passenger side, that does make sense.

( 'enough' is what gustave needs right now. the rest, he'll learn in time. he moves around the car, towards the passenger side's door, and gets in. )

I'm Gustave, by the way. Thank you for your help.

( gustave's hands go down at the wave, because while he's willing to help, he can also respect when others want to have a say. he'll just be extra watchful.

the mention of healing spells does remind him— )

It's no healing spell, but I... have a healing tint. It might help ease your pain.

( especially since it seems to be really getting to him. )

( alright, so that's the important thing—that he's not hurt.

gustave lets go of him to give him some space, but lingers, one arm at the top of the open door. )

Do you want to step out?

( he doesn't think this guy should be up to continuing to drive after all that, especially if he's feeling anxious about what just happened. )

—hey, you're alright. You're not in trouble.

[ Alright, yes, it needs a lot of work. She was trying not to give it a complex, okay? (Does she just assume even the smallest of robots might develop personalities and become the next Skynet if they aren't nice to them? At this point, it's bound to happen, so she's taking precautions.)

Frowning at the little thing, she leans closer and then to the side, remembering the dust cloud and not wanting to share his fate, before shrugging of her shoulders. ]

Honestly? I'm a computer person, but robots are beyond me. I could take a look at its programming if I had the right equipment, but my kidnappers didn't bring any of my gear.

I guess I'll try not to rough them up too much.

[There's a teasing lilt to her voice as she knocks her head back, rolling her eyes. That, together with a quick nod at Gustave, is all the warning she gives before she moves to strike. Maelle moves swiftly, her sword an extension of her arm as she closes the gap between herself and one of the hoodlums, whipping at him instead of piercing towards him, Gustave's instruction fresh in her mind.

As if their surprise at seeing the weapons wasn't enough, the one that was struck lets out a yelp of pain—or shock, it was hard to differentiate in the heat of the moment—before falling into a heap on the ground. The remaining two glances at their fallen friend, then between Gustave and Maelle, reconsidering their next course of action.

Maelle, on the other hand, scoffs.]

I'd run if I were you. [She cocks her head behind them, towards Gustave.] Or he might show you exactly what his arm can do.

sorry for slow response, moving weekend has been crazy!

[ Oh.

Please tell him it's not gonna be like that. ]

To go inside.

[ He doesn't mind calling the shots, but he is getting worried about having to explain them, now. Explanations in a controlled environment when they have time to spare are fine. (Goodness knows he spends enough time explaining shit to his bestie, after all.) But in the middle of a dangerous situation, when reaction time is everything? ]

If you're not up for it, I can go alone.

[ It's not ideal, but then, neither is being stranded in some weird alternate dimension full of strangers. ]

Jack can tell that Rune is something special too, there is energy around him that is different, and when Rune mentions a spell, that seems to click in his head. A magic user then, they do have invisible power around them, like Rowena. He's instantly curious about that. He suspects Rune might know that he's something else too, most magic users guess that quickly. They have to focus on his healing first.

"Of course. I understand. I didn't expect any of this either." He's brand new on his way to the city, just like Rune. He's not supposed to use his powers frequently around new people but this is a whole other world, he thinks it's important that he does to help others. Jack reaches out and puts a hand on Rune's shoulder very gently. He doesn't want to hurt him. A white glow surrounds the wound and lights up Jack's eyes at the same time, knitting Rune's flesh back together, and it feels like heat is seeping into it. Not painful, just strange.

It's quick too, only a few seconds to make certain that the burn has faded, and Jack pulls his hand back. Angelic healing is powerful. His eyes are still glowing from the use of them but he smiles warmly, trying to appear less like a threat. He's used to people balking when they look at him.

"That should help."
