Lights Out

[ Natasha felt like she was following an impossible trail of breadcrumbs.

She thought she’d seen him, the day before, but he’d vanished into the shadows before she could reach him. She’d almost convinced herself it was her mind playing tricks on her, wishful thinking, maybe, to not be here alone. Almost talked herself out of looking further, until she heard two locals at the bar talking about the fights and…

…Maybe? She had to look. Just to know, one way or another. If it was really him…

You could find a lot out about who passed where if you knew the right people to ask. The right questions to ask. It came as naturally to her as breathing, after all these years. It’s certainly not the first time she’s had to track him down, even if she knows he’s not hiding purposefully from her. Probably.

Still, she hadn’t accounted for literally hunting through the dark for him, that proved a bit too much of a challenge even for her and the thump he’d heard at his door had been born out of frustration, rather than intent.

But then his voice comes from the other side and she freezes in disbelief, not even able to breathe as the sound of it washes over her and she could almost cry with relief.

As it is, her voice wobbles a bit as she thunks her forehead against the solid wood and gives a shaky exhale before calling back through the door. ]

You sure about that? You’ve been awfully hard to find.
