[ Charles had never delved into a mind as deeply as he did with Erik. He respected Raven's wish not to read her mind or establish a connection like that. If they spoke it was out of necessity, and he intentionally refused to take control of her, he made a promise that he kept up. He put many walls up, partially to keep himself in check, so he did not snoop, and to keep sane.
He forced himself into Erik's mind that first time to save his life, but the truth was, he didn't need to go as deeply as he did. It'd been a panicked moment, trying to convince him to let go, but it was more than that too. He swept through Erik's mind like a wave onto a shore, digging deep, touching every corner. The more he did it, the more he wanted to. He didn't do that with any of the others because Erik didn't tell him to stop, even after Charles let him know that he saw everything. He seemed as drawn into Charles as the other way around, until their minds colliding together was as natural as breathing the air.
The way Erik's mind was shut off to him once he took Shaw's helmet was agonizing. The abandonment was just a step further than the space already put between them. Charles would have never allowed himself this if they weren't in this situation because he knew how it would feel to be back inside.
Charles isn't only a telepath, he can feel emotions as strongly as he hears thoughts. Which means that when Erik feels that grief and pain, one of his own making, Charles cannot help but absorb it and fall into the same. The rest of the city may as well not exist now, it's only them. That's always what happens with them. Tunnel vision. Tears shimmer in blue eyes but do not fall yet. ]
You left me. You threw this away, it wasn't my choice.
