"In my experience, what you are isn't as important as who you are."

Charles handled quite a few people who were afraid of what they were, of their powers and what it meant for them, and he often reassured them that their heart, their choices, that is what truly mattered. Mutants are unique for their evolution, but they are special because of what they do with it. He wonders if this man is struggling with the same question of what versus who, as the first of his kind.

"A mage. As in magic." Magic, mutant abilities, mostly in the same vein when it comes down to the details. He is no expert but figures the source of the power might be vastly different though. Perhaps he'll find out, if his friend on the astral plane plans on sharing. "It can be lonely, being the first. I thought I was for a long time."
