[ Jack is someone who is comfortable in companionable silence. He doesn't mind it stretching on as the two of them drive and he wouldn't be the one to break the quiet first. He should have expected that question eventually, given that he is an angel. He turns his head to look at Jesse when he begins and doesn't interrupt him just like before, he lets him say what he needs to and get it out.

He understands all too well what it feels like to have done bad things and fear what that means for the future. Jack the first time went to Heaven and it seemed right, but he went to the Empty after he made all his mistakes, and part of that is because the Shadow believed firmly he belonged there. But he also thinks that he doesn't deserve to be in Heaven anymore. He hasn't found absolution, no matter how hard he tries to be good.]

There is a Heaven and a Hell, at least in my world, and many other universes that God created. But I don't know about here, and I don't know about yours.

[ It's likely in his eyes that they exist, he's never heard of some place without them, but Jack isn't going to open a portal to Hell, and he couldn't to Heaven since he doesn't know how. He would prove it if he could. He takes the question seriously and his gaze is steady, non-judgmental, sympathetic without pity. He's been there. ]

From what I'm told, when you die, everything is added up. Redemption is possible. You have many years left to change your path, if that's what you want to do. I can't guarantee you, but I know it's not set in stone.

[ Jack doesn't add that sometimes a person can do good in the end of their life, and it doesn't save them. Rowena did too much evil in her life for her redemption to actually matter big picture. It's a tragedy but she found a way to make it work for her, and he respects and admires her for that. She used her influence for good, even in the worst place. He doubts Jesse could be to that level though. Even if he's done bad things, only the worst of the worst go there. ]

My biological father believed that humans were hard-wired to fail because they were born flawed. I think maybe for some that's true, but I also think many of them are just trying to do their best in a complicated world.

[ This is the kind of mentality that eventually makes Jack a very good and kind God. He tilts his head, trying to catch Jesse's gaze with his steady one. It's always easier for him to reassure other people when he's so hard on himself.]

No one is only one thing. Being alive is hard. Just do your best. It's all anyone can do.
