I can turn it on, and I do grasp how to make it go, but...

[He slips back into the driver's seat and makes a broad gesture at the dashboard and stick.]

The automobile is a Volkswagen, but it doesn't look a thing like a Kommissbrot or a Volksauto.

[The way Arthur pronounces the names indicates a familiarity with German. When there were cars, they had been German cars. Brought by the Germans. And then taken back by the Germans.]

Not that I ever drove either of those, but I remember riding in them when I was little. And sitting in the stripped husks of them as a teenager.

[Which may explain why he finds himself so perplexed by a relatively simple configuration. He was used to cars which had been gutted, useful pieces of them ripped out and spirited off for other purposes.]
