[ Scott didn't expect the tears, and for a moment, it catches him slightly off guard. But when he hears the Professor's next few words, it all makes sense to him, and he gives the man a gentle smile. The hand on Charles lightly squeezes his in reassurance once again before it lifts so Scott's thumb can brush away any tears that threatens to fall. He fondly remembers a time when he was younger, frustrated by the outcome of one Danger Room session, that angry tears managed to escape his glasses. Charles did exactly what he's doing now, then. A favor returned, he thinks.

Shaking his head gently, Scott pulls back a little, albeit still crouching down in front of Charles. ]

Nothing to say sorry for. We've all had our moments of difficulty. [ He remembers that aforementioned moment again. Charles telling him not to be so hard on himself. ] I wasn't exactly like this when you first met me either.

[ Taking Charles' hands once again, Scott's smile seems resolute. ] No matter where you are in your life, though, I'll be here for you, Professor. No need to thank me. [ In many ways, Scott owes the Professor his life. This is but a small favor he's giving. He pauses, reminiscing the exact thing Charles told him during that time he was frustrated, after clearing away angry tears. ]

You taught me that sometimes where we are right now is exactly where we need to be. That just because someone stumbles or loses their way, doesn't mean they're lost forever. We all just need a bit of help.

[ Because he was too proud to admit his mistakes back then, too arrogant to think he doesn't need help when he does. He has stumbled a bit more after that, but Scott has learned that reliance on others is key. That only in seeking others can they build a community. ]
