( The disappointment about Dean feels like an additional shard in Sam's throat, but he swallows it as best he can, not letting the feeling show on his expression for more than half a second before smiling through it. Sam's learned from his mistakes, and he's not going to let Jack think that he's just a means to a selfish end again. )

It's okay, Jack. I'm just glad you're here. ( And he means it. As much as he wishes Jack were safe in the bunker instead of trapped in this incredibly shady city in this weird-ass universe, he knows all too well that safety is relative. This way, he can keep an eye on his - the kid, and being close to family is always better than the alternative.

The severity in Jack's voice as he makes his promise takes Sam by surprise. Jack has taken the family business seriously since the start, but he sounds so resolute, almost older. Sam's heart feels heavy at how the kid talks like the whole world is resting on his shoulders, and he can't help but feel like he failed him - he's not a regular kid, but he's still just a kid, and Sam knows he put way too much pressure on him to master his powers. Jack is powerful, and he wants to help people, but he should know that he doesn't have to do that alone. )

Hey. ( Sam puts a hand on Jack's shoulder, gentle but solid. His tone is as open as his expression. ) This isn't all on you, okay? We'll get through this the way all Winchesters do: together.

( With Jack here, the odds of finding Dean and Cas are in their favor. Sam has to believe that. The way Jack specifies "Lucifer's" strength regarding his own powers is... strange, but he tables the topic for later. For now, they have a lot to catch up on. ) I'm starving. How about I lock up here, and we can grab something to eat, okay?
