[ Charles doesn't need to be in Erik's head to know what's on his mind. He knows it all too well. But he is in his mind so his confusion and uncertainty is clear on every level. Charles truthfully isn't entirely sure either. His reputation with his future students is stellar and that has its own host of issues and anxieties that he'll come up against if he ever meets them. He hardly feels in his current state of mind that he's worth the sort of reverence he knew his future self experienced. He's a mess of a person, still lingering on all the ways his life went wrong.
But he can hardly ask people who nearly died because of Erik to give him grace simply because Charles himself always will. That is a problem for the future. He believes there can be a medium place, but there can be no separation of his life with Erik or with them. The worst Erik has done as of right now is to him specifically. So he can choose to forgive.
That time together in the start was life-changing. Perspective-changing. Charles became a better person for it. He tugs firmly on Erik's shirt to try and force him to look at him. ]
You are responsible for a few things, Erik, but destroying our class is not one of them. They split apart or died because of the government. You can blame yourself for the things you did, not that.
[ And then the refusal to move on Charles did gives him his own reasons to feel guilty. He could have continued but at the time it seemed so pointless. Erik was causing trouble with his own mutants, but clearly that turned out very poorly as well. It was not a good period of time for either of them. ]
We'll cross that bridge if we get there. I will make my choices and so will they. But you were hard on me for turning my back on our people. Do you think sticking your head in the sand will make you feel better?
