If he thought Emma was around he would have been more cautious, or rather, if they did touch minds, he would have known it was her. This is something he'll eventually learn to handle better, when he meets other telepaths like Jean Grey, and the world of psychics widens up. It's a good lesson though; this is not his world. There may be dozens of people here that can sponge off him accidentally.
