( She is not, by nature, a particularly antagonistic person — not until it comes time for an actual fight. She has a tendency to flip like a switch; to go from stoic and carefully composed, to an animalistic instrument of feral rage. It's unlikely the latter will ever be directed at him, and so the most she's ever likely to get with him is a little brusque and short. She has no reason to be that way now. He is helping her, and he left behind a relatively positive impression.

An impression that doesn't quite line up with what she's hearing. I don't feel like a very brave man; she wonders what he's been through. What he's experienced recently in his life to lead to this uncertainty in himself — or maybe uncertainty isn't quite the right word. He looks like a man who is hurting. He looks like a fresh wound still healing.

At least he feels comfortable enough to use his gift in front of her. That probably means something.

She takes the tool from him gently. She'll pack it all away into the back of her jeep in a second, but first:
