Exactly.

[ And in place where loss feels inevitable, where everyone is going to die sooner and sooner, so many people stop having children. It starts to snowball. Now they have fewer and fewer able-bodied people for work like salvaging, farming, teaching. Expeditioners used to number in the hundreds, even thousands. She's seen their bodies herself.

Now... Now they had a little over a dozen on their mission. ]


A group goes every year. And with populace numbers dwindling, that number gets smaller and smaller. It's encouraged - even expected, for a time - that if it was your final year...you'd go. You'd do your best. Nowadays, more and more want to enjoy the time they have left.

[ She can't blame them. In so many other circumstances, she might've stayed behind too. But she has students to think about, loved ones to try to fight for. The worst thing that can happen is she'll die, and she's already accepted that outcome. So why not try?
