( The smile that spreads across her face is still a little sad, but it's sincere, and fond, and genuine. I imprint quickly on people. )

I know.

( They only had days together, but she felt the connection. She's wondered about Logan a lot, whether or not he ever cared about her or if he just died for her because that's what good men do. Whether or not he even liked her. But she's never wondered about Charles. She knew, always, without question, that he liked her, and that she liked him, and that they both cared about one another. His presence in her mind made that clear; the way he used to speak to her in ways that didn't require her speaking back, the way he understood her at a time when nobody else did...

She decides with staggering ferocity that things aren't going to go the same way here as they did when she was a girl. She'll kill anybody that so much as threatens him. She's not going to let it happen again. She won't.

She's been looking for allies since she got here. She didn't expect to find such a real one so soon, one that she could actually trust so thoroughly, but he's here now. She has a purpose, a person, and a direction.

She squeezes his hand back, and after a grounding breath, nudges them into moving again. A slow, ambling pace toward wherever it was he meant to take them to start with.

She's noticed something, though. Something that stands out as strange; her eyes cut over to him after a few seconds of quiet.

I haven't felt you in my mind.

( Not that she'd notice if he didn't want her to, but... it hadn't taken long at all when they first met. She never minded it, not the way some people tend to do. Verbal communication used to be hard for her. Sometimes it still is; having someone able to read her without her having to find the words, without having to expose herself by saying them, was nice. )
