Test Drive ∞ May 2025
The First Collision
©
Jump ⇅ :: ArrivalPanoramaFringesInvite Request
The Diadem is an invite-only panfandom game set in a retro-futuristic world where uprooted souls find themselves deep within an eerie wasteland of roads and highways frequently assailed by cosmic storms. Three united strongholds keep the population. Its capital is Panorama, a large metropolis at the planet's center.

Soon, you realize you aren't alone. Calling themselves fluxdrifts, the "locals" have similar stories to you, either for themselves or their ancestry. You speak to an old woman who claims she hailed from another star. You meet a young man who says his great-great-grandfather knew a strange language everybody spoke "back home." As you explore, you stumble across a coin you recognize or your sister's locket. How did it get here? What does this mean? That's for you to discover.

But first, you need to find a ride.

No invites needed to play on the TDM. Everyone's welcome! Use the Invite Request thread below to request an invite from another player.

∞ Summary ∞
IC-wise, arrivals are scattered throughout the month. Events described on the TDM are also ongoing throughout the month. If you'd rather jump right into the action, you're free to begin in media res with your character having already been on the planet for several days.

Post-impact, characters will wake up in a med tent by the Scrapyard. From there, they must accept a vehicle on loan and make the 2-hour drive to the nearest city, Panorama. If they refuse the car because they don't want the loan, they'll be in debt for medical bills instead...so just take the car. It'll come in handy.

Some things to keep in mind when bringing in your character:

  • Pick an injury. At minimum, they got knocked out; at most, whatever they can recover from. Medicine is decently advanced so they'll heal faster if not painlessly.
  • Decide items kept. Reasonable items on their person only: photos, keys, clothes, costumes. No pets or animal companions. Wildly out-of-place tech and personal cell phones will be damaged beyond repair.
  • Select a weapon. Do this only if eligible. Guidelines about weapons and powers are on the FAQ.
  • Choose a vehicle. Decide whether your character gets 2-3 options or if they're stuck with something they hate. Players can pick directly from our collection or source their own images. Anything under a similar aesthetic will work. If your character needs accommodations for driving, they can have them. Ask us for details.
  • Get a phone. Characters have to obtain a phone (and a SIM card) themselves. If they've got one from home, it's damaged beyond repair. Phones are cheap. It'll only take a couple of weeks to afford one. You need to know the number before you text or call anyone. Read about phones and the Forum before you hop on it.

TDM threads can be canon if characters are accepted. Top-levels made to the TDM should be open to all.

Arrival & Introduction
Date: Throughout May
You've tumbled over a cliff. You were fighting for your life. You're on the cusp of death. You slipped in the shower. Whatever the catalyst, you struggle to cling to consciousness. As darkness overtakes you, a swirling vortex warps light and shadow in a way that defies all physics. A dark wail etches into your very bones. You couldn't describe it if you tried. You can barely comprehend what it is.

Then you open your eyes.

Through the figure's mask ©, you swear the face is grinning down at you. The tent you're in smells of antiseptic, and scratchy blankets line your cot. Injuries you've sustained have been bandaged. In the corner, you spot a MedBot that's fixed you up. Depending on the extent of your injuries, the doctor on duty might give you some painkillers before you go. Thankfully, your belongings are by the exit. Sorry if anything's damaged. Your landing was pretty rough.

You follow the figure outside. They are Yom Crook, here to lend a hand to fellow fluxdrifts like yourself. Their car's parked beside them. Actually, there are lots of cars around, but Yom Crook's stands out with its painted shark mouth. They explain they found you, unconscious, in a diffusion zone and brought you here. The nearest city is a 2-hour drive northeast. Forget about walking. You'll never make it. Also, you owe the doctor a lot of money for patching you up. But you're in luck: they've got some wheels for you and if you accept the vehicle on loan, Yom Crook will cover your medical bills. That's a good deal, right? It's not the shiniest car or motorcycle, but it'll do. If fortune favors, you'll get to choose between two or three options. Plus, if you need accommodations to drive—like adjustments to your seat height or modified controls—you'll receive all that for free.

Take the vehicle. (And the loan.) Yom Crook assures you that you'll have six months before collectors come around. Any time you're ready to pay a part of it down, return here to the Scrapyard. You'll get a receipt and everything. Paying off the loan in six months isn't impossible, but it will take a lot of work. Just don't get too lax. There's a good chance you'll be juggling multiple loans as you try to get by.

You either know how to drive, or you'll have a bare-bones manual to get you started. Road rules are more a suggestion than enforced, so just hit the pedal and go. The car has some basic features. The built-in compass will help you navigate.

OPTIONAL PROMPTS: a flat tire; a body on the road (is it a trap?); a fender bender

Panorama
Explore & Settle In
Conditions: Warm spring temperatures, light showers
After 2 hours on the road, you find civilization. The largest of the strongholds, Panorama is where the economy thrives. Massive power plants glowing red make it visible from a distance. The city is divided into three districts. For now, you can access the Pavilion and the Blocks. Don't worry about the Sanctum; they're not letting you in.

You only need to know two things about Panorama: 1) it's big, the size of a modern metropolis, and you'll need your car to get around; 2) anything goes as long as you don't pick a fight with the wrong person. Street smarts will get you far. Despite its geographical size, the population isn't huge. With roughly a million people in a city designed for over twice that number, Panorama is far from deserted, but nor is it overcrowded. It's a good thing. Resources are limited as it is.
The Pavilion: Free Samples
©
Like any large city, Panorama features a couple of supermarkets. The stock's not as consistent as a proper supermarket. On occasion, shelves can remain cleaned out for a week or two. Regardless, the long tradition of free samples remains. If you're not already shopping, you'll notice the crowded parking lot and clusters of lines inside.

Try samples, push through the crowds as you shop, or give yourself a five-finger discount. If you're cautious, you can pocket a few small items without consequences. The Pavillion doesn't have the infrastructure for surveillance; unless someone sees you, you won't be caught. Steal from the store or pilfer someone's wallet. Maybe you even make a new friend if you bump into another fluxdrift. Or, start a fight with somebody who cut you off in the cheese line. Don't make too much of a ruckus, or you'll be thrown out.

As you look around, you'll see posters advertising temporary positions for the cash register or graveyard shifts in the warehouse. Seems they might've lost several employees recently (how'd that happen?), which is good for you! It's just a 6-week position, but it'll get you on your feet. The city has temporary positions like this all over. Permanent ones are harder to come by when you're new.
Samples include: steamed cabbage dumplings, synthetic cherry juice, cheddar cheese, and chocolate-covered alien eggs (it's crunchy and weirdly tasty). They're served in the usual throwaway paper cups with little toothpicks.
The Blocks: Power Outage
©
Power's finicky in Panorama, especially in the Blocks. Saint Margery's Hospital, located in the same area, has priority for power so the first to go are the motels. Maybe you've been in your room for a couple of weeks, maybe you just got here—and by the way, every motel desk is happy to put the fee on your tab if you don't have the money upfront—but all the motels on the east side are in a blackout, leaving only the west side motels up and running.

What do you do? You have three choices:

  • Risk leaving your room and head to the other side where there's power. Knock on some doors and negotiate with another to share the room. They might shut the door in your face, ask for a favor in return, or be nice enough to help you with no strings attached. There's no guarantee your unattended room will be untouched, though, and you'll be on the hook for any damages an intruder causes.
  • Sit in the dark and deal. It's not the worst idea, but the TV's down, the vending machines are powered down, and with the entire place plunged into darkness, you risk getting robbed. If you struggle with defending yourself, you might want to find some trustworthy company. You can also sneak out of there and let them take your leftover pizza. It's not like you've got a ton of valuables, right? Plus, clobbering someone in the face with a frying pan sounds great until you realize you've gotta do something with the body. And what if this person's got a friend waiting?
  • Get in your car and drive (or grab a friend for a road trip). If you scroll the Forum, you might notice reports on diffusion zones southward. Besides, these motels are hardly your forever home. The city can only provide so much. Why not go for a ride and see what you can find out there?

OPTIONAL PROMPTS: clean up on aisle 3 (what is that goo?); a knock at your door but no one's there; you hear screaming or a commotion down the hall

The Fringes
Quad 3: Lockdown
Conditions: Stormy, with flooding roads
Felix Bjurstrom
> Date: 125-05-17
> Time: 02:15:57

> Emergency road lights have been reported in Quadrant 3! Please, can someone go see what's there? When last we chasers investigated emergency lights, a whole truck filled with sour candy had tipped over. Our stores were stocked for weeks! Oh, be careful - reception looks bad in that zone.
Whether you end up here on your own or you were following a tip on the Forum, the outcome is the same: you come to a stop in front of a 2-story office building that's flooded several inches deep. Emergency lights from a roadblock flicker through the stormy night. Stepping out of your car, you're soaked within seconds. When you check your phone, you don't have any bars. No calls in or out.

Through the open windows, a computer awakens and displays a cheerful smile. The lights inside switch on.

Pick your scenario role below. Your thread partner doesn't need to take the opposite role! They can join you in the same scenario (i.e. trapped together). Players are also free to create a generic NPC for the other side to facilitate the thread.

After characters escape, they'll find one bottle of antibiotics in their pocket or car, whether they remember taking it or not.

A: Sealed In
As you peer through the windows, you see crates of medicine floating around. Antibiotics in the diadem are valuable. Hospitals and doctors are always buying. You can keep it for yourself or make a quick buck. Or maybe you're compelled to help somebody back in the city who's in need. Whatever the reason, you decide to take the risk and step inside.

Water splashes around your ankles. The lock buzzes behind you. If you try to break the windows, you discover they're unnaturally resistant to shattering. With the whole place locked tight, the water begins to churn. Then the computer lights up again.

Warning, it flashes in large, bold text. Quarantine in progress. Release code required for exit.
  • To find the code, you'll have to search. Duck under the water, go through sopping envelopes and sticky notes or pick the locks on the filing cabinets and desk drawers. You can also try hacking the computers. Use your computer knowledge or fall back on the age-old trick of seeing who wrote down their password.
  • The files, notepads, and emails start innocuous, but as you look through them, disturbing phrases jump out at you—a dark thought you've had or a cruel taunt from someone in your past. The longer you're fixed on the terrible words, the higher the water begins to rise. Only another can break you out of your trance.
  • With the rising water comes fear. And the more you're afraid, the more the water also rises. You begin to see faces in the water, bobbing like balloon heads. Do you recognize them? If you move to take a closer look, they will sink back beneath the surface as if never there.
  • If you manage to swallow your panic, you can eventually find a triple-laminated binder with the release code and instructions. Bad news: you need someone on the outside to punch in the 6 strange symbols in order. The instructions explain that the code panel is located at the back of the building.
Let's hope a friendly face comes along.

B: Set Free
As you peer through the windows, you see not just the crates of medicine but someone trapped inside. They look like they might be in trouble, and from your vantage point, you notice that the water is bubbling strangely. It's definitely not normal rainwater. As you watch, the water rises unnaturally, stopping and starting. It's as if the water level is responding to an external stimulus.
  • The glass is soundproof. You can't hear what the person inside is saying, so you'll have to communicate with each other another way. Try charades, typing on your phone, or whatever you think of. Eventually, you determine that they're stuck and that you need to enter some sort of code onto a pad located—according to your trapped partner—at the back of the building.
  • Around the back, shadows swallow your surroundings. The panel must be pried open, but a slippery substance makes it hard to get a good grip. Each time the substance touches you, you grow uneasy. You swear you see eyes watching you, though when you turn around, nothing's there.
  • You can't seem to keep the instructions in your mind. And those symbols...they burn into your retinas. Through them, you glimpse an incomprehensibly massive figure unfurling in the darkness, pulsing as if in a deep sleep. When you snap back to reality, you realize you've injured yourself, slicing your hand on a sharp edge or a bruise you can't remember getting.
  • Once you manage to release the doors, the water inside the office drains upward into the sky as though sucked out by a giant hose. The darkness spreads. Get out of there fast before the shadows drag you or your partner into the void.
Of course, you don't have to help anyone. You can leave the individual there, make a deal, or outright extort them. But remember, you're not the only person on these roads. You might want to play your cards carefully, even if altruism isn't your first instinct.

( Sam matches Jack's genuine smile with his own. He hadn't smiled this much since before he got here, but Jack just has that effect on people. Or at least, he has that effect on Sam. He knows they're both not even remotely out of the woods yet, but they've managed the multiple-universe bullshit before, and Sam's willing to bet they can do it again. He's always more hopeful when family's around.

He grabs the garage's keys to lock up, eyebrows raising as Jack mentions a bowling alley and a job. It shouldn't be too surprising - Jack can be naive, but he's resourceful too, and this city isn't exactly kind to those who can't pay - but it's still a little bizarre to hear. In a lot of ways, Jack is still a kid, and Sam can't help but see him that way sometimes, no matter how powerful. )

( Sam wears a fond smile at Jack's logic on where Dean might show up. A bar is definitely the best bet. ) Smart of you. Sure, you can treat this time. ( He leads them out the side door, making sure to walk out first, quickly eyeing the street for any immediate threats. When he finds none, he turns back to Jack, his gun still resting in its holster. ) How did you get here? Did you fly?

[ Jack listens carefully without interruption. He clearly values advice from others and takes it to heart, even from strangers. This one seems to know what he's talking about which he appreciates. His fathers have said similar things to him before but it's always good to get more opinions, especially given how sheltered he's been from other people. ]

I've been in that position several times. It never feels good no matter which way it goes.

[ Jack does experience end of the world situations. His choices are always high stakes, his very presence is a high stake in any given moment. He's had to kill for others, and he doesn't enjoy it, it was only when he was soulless that he felt less discomforted by killing. By then he was empty and he knew he should have felt bad, his original self would have been, the person he is now cares very deeply. He doesn't take killing lightly, including his enemies. Only Michael did he feel strongly about. ]

There's no justification for killing. Sometimes you have to for the greater good, but that's something you have to carry. I still think about the first person I killed. It was an accident, my fathers assured me those happen in our work, but I remember.

[ They said he didn't have to take to heart every mistake, they all had done it. They were trying to be kind to him at the time, but Jack knew it was wrong. He was so young then, and he'd been excited to show off for Castiel. It wasn't a case of someone getting caught in the middle, he was eager to prove himself and was happy to at the time. Since then there's a lot more blood on his hands. He doesn't forget the number. ]

I hope to be wiser. My father Castiel is very wise. He helped as much as he could.

The response makes him remember that it is not normal to do that. The majority of humans on his planet don't even know that supernatural creatures exist, let alone other universes. He's supposed to be much better on top of seeming normal, but as per usual, Jack doesn't always think through his words. He wants to make friends, so he tries to connect. Foolishly, at times.

"Well. It doesn't happen often!" In his case, he is the one who caused the rift, and that definitely is rare and shouldn't happen. Whoops. He hasn't considered trying to do it here, bad idea. "It's okay, the other world I went to was terrible, this one is much better. We get cars and there's no one trying to kill us yet. Not that it's normal when people do." He stumbles a little over the words at the end there.

"Maybe I'm thinking of a movie!" There. That could make sense.

( Sam sits up and leans to one side so he can see over the hood of the car he's working on when the stranger mentions Terry. When he sees a woman holding some groceries, Sam bites back a sigh that his boss didn't tell him jack shit about a delivery, again. Still, it's not this employee's fault, so he pushes himself up to his feet and makes his way over. )

No, it's okay, I understand. ( Sam pulls off his oil-stained gloves and lets them fall onto a nearby desk, then grabs a folder that should have the latest invoices in them, if Terry hasn't forgotten again. )

Has it already been paid for? Sorry, my boss doesn't tell me much of anything. Even when he decides to take a day off. ( He makes a face at the woman that he hopes comes across as playfully put-off, the kind of look a coworker might share with a sympathetic employee about a shitty customer, a shared comraderie in suffering. )
hellunbounded: (look: soft surprised)

( Sam doesn't hear the door open and close again, but he also doesn't hear anyone speak, and that immediately puts him a bit on edge. If this is another robbery attempt, they could have at least done it earlier, and not right before closing.

Breathing through his nose, Sam pushes himself to his feet, already reaching for the gun in its holster - he's used to expecting the worst - but he pauses when he sees an anxious-looking young man in front of him, offering him a wad of bills with big, pleading eyes. Sam's mouth twists in sympathy at the sight. )

Listen. ( Sam sighs, already feeling his resolve weaken. ) You can leave the car overnight, if you want. I won't tell my boss, and I can take care of whatever is wrong first thing tomorrow morning. Does that work for you? ( He really shouldn't be wasting daylight, especially in the place like this. )

[ Charles is not going to tell him to leave. He's willing to let healing happen between them, otherwise he would already have stormed off (angrily wheeled off). There is always going to be a part of him that simply cannot let go of it, of them. Logan's words about him never giving up on the people he loved stays true, even if for a time there, he really did forget. It's not as if in his drunken state over the years he didn't consider going to get Erik in the Pentagon. It wasn't possible, but it may have crossed his mind, when he was in his cups and thinking about the past. It's the same as him imagining using Cerebro to find Raven, but he never did either.

Perhaps he is simply not willing to go back into his depressive state. The situation with Logan and the future he saw, it brought him back to life. This wasn't the life he envisioned, but it is the one he has at the moment.

Charles can be snobby but he could probably do fine as either of those things, and they would work better for him than something labor heavy. He has a pleasant speaking voice and he's extremely polite to people, so forward facing customer service of some kind would likely fit him. He is kind and friendly when he's not in a bad state of mind and wallowing in self-pity, like he was when Erik first came upon him. Like it or not, his friend picked him up a little. ]

Erik.

[ He reaches out to touch his sleeve again and the skin through the fabric, not tangling their fingers as they almost did before, but applying that connection once again. ]

Thank you for not making it harder. [ After a pause, he smirks wryly. ] And not dropping another building on me.

[ Is he going to let it go? Absolutely not! Erik is going to be hearing that for quite some time so he best get used to it. ]

I saw the future you when I saw it through Logan's eyes. In the end, we were a team. If we do ever find our people again, consider that as a door not closed unless you close it.

( Sam keeps trying to slow his breaths and center himself at the woman - Daisy, he reminds himself - keeps talking. Answers aren't forthcoming, which isn't exactly a surprise, but at least he's not alone in a tent with a masked stranger and a bizarre robot anymore. This person looks human, and she isn't attacking him, so that has to be stone number one in this circumstance. Dean still isn't here, and his stomach threatens to upturn at the reminder, but he knows continuing to panic won't get him anywhere. Information first. )

Okay. ( He finally drops the syringe, hoping it relays to Daisy that he's no longer a threat, grateful that she hasn't reacted to his tightly wound instincts in violence. He picks out what he can from the mystery she's unfolding in front of him. 'From Earth?' )

I'm from an Earth, at least. ( His voice is less thin and fragile, but he still looks as unmoored as he feels, looking around and taking in... a junkyard? Suddenly, a realization smacks into him: alternate earths. Of course. He must have fallen into a different universe somehow. The explanation doesn't eliminate his worry, but it helps ground him, gives him a place to start. He looks over at Daisy, eyes still wide, but appearing less frantic. ) You're not from here? Do you know how you got here, then?
hellunbounded: (exasperated: crossed arms)

[personal profile] hellunbounded 2025-06-02 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes two of us.

( Sam tilts his head back and lets out a long sigh, releasing the last of the adrenaline in his body. When he looks back at Rowena, there might be a hint of a relieved smile on his lips. Dammit, but if he isn't relieved to see a face that might just qualify as "friendly" in these circumstances. )

Need a ride? Or are you planning to hitch hike in that jumpsuit?

( honestly, samuel, appreciate the jumpsuit, she looks fantastic )

Well, it'd be a shame to waste an offer.

( his offer softens her frustration, smiling at him. whilst she's still figuring out the details of her resurrection, she doesn't find it strange that he hasn't questioned it. she's the queen of hell, even as a soul here she'd be more than some of the things he'd encountered. and resurrection is kind of her thing )

I assume you're heading to the city they spoke of and not finding somewhere else?

[ Everything feels better when Sam smiles back at him. They can do this. Jack has faith once more. If Chuck has sent them both here, they can do the Winchester thing of finding their way to success by sheer willpower! Maybe he's just buying himself some time. And that means Jack gets more time alive, which he appreciates, and more time with Sam, until they get back.

Jack just did what he thought Sam and Castiel would tell him. And obviously Sam thought the exact same thing, as he got himself a job as a mechanic once he arrived. Pragmatic choices in the face of something insanely confusing. He likes working. He knows he weirds out his boss a little by being so calm and polite, but he gets the job done. ]

No, I drove! Sam, I have a motorcycle! [ Jack smiles in a giddy way, his eyes brightening. ] I thought Dean would find it cool if he saw it, it's not exactly like the Matrix ones, but it feels like I'm in one.

[ Jack loves movies of all kinds. It is classic him to yet again think of a way that Dean would find him 'cool' to impress him. From day one he did that as a desperate need for approval. Unfortunately years later it's still his instinct. But he's also eager for Sam's approval, as the way he is looking at him is clearly hopeful about that very thing. ]

I've only crashed it four times -- no, five, but three were on the first day, and it was okay!

[ Jack naturally kept him and the bike safe each time and brushed himself off like it was nothing since he's near impervious to injury. It was more about learning since the balance was much more important than in a blocky car that Dean taught him in. ]

I taught other people how to drive a car. I was the knowledgeable one for once!

[ Charles is not someone who gives compliments off-hand, despite how friendly and pleasant he can be when he's in a good place. He means what he says and usually that meaning is what gives his words strength. He can see the qualities in Scott that he looked for in the start, and also the qualities that he tries to exemplify in his own actions. Charles is far kinder to other people than he is to himself.

Scott isn't acting like this is the only time he's heard such praise which Charles is very grateful for. His future self continued the support and encouragement that he knows caused positive reinforcement for his own students, while they were alive and around. As for the strange experience he had with his future self, well. ]

It was strange for me too, I would never have thought that possible, but I also didn't think time travel was possible.

[ The X-Men and mutants are capable of many things, but that is a new gift to him and seems so much larger than what he knows. He does wonder, on a strictly curious teacher side, how one trains someone in a gift like that, but it's not as if he got to have an elongated conversation. ]

I was able to transport my mind into Logan's consciousness in the future, and the older me sensed that I was there. He said he still had faith in the dream, even after we were near to extinction.

[ That is shocking to Charles. He is on the road to getting there but he can't say at this very moment he believes as strongly in that. He knows that Raven's actions did put public attention to the side for now, but forever? Only time will tell. ]

My sister made the right choice. Perhaps other key people did as well.

The is carried by the current, and rushes forward on the water to slam straight into Hopper who's currently too preoccupied with the apparent faces in the water.

"What are you-" Henry begins, for he's managed to not spy any faces just yet; only the fact that Hopper's going to get slammed into by that desk, which will submerge him into the water if he topples over after — assuming he doesn't manage to stay upright, that is, which he very well might!

It's funny how habit works. Henry could very well just use his telekinesis to lift Hoppeer back on balance, but he reaches out a hand instead, instinctively. Having his powers tamped down for so many years, sometimes he still does things the hard way.

As Jack starts rabbiting, Laszlo glances to the side. As someone who not infrequently fucks up and reveals something he wasn't supposed to, he immediately recognizes this sudden spike of logorrhea for what it is. That doesn't really help him understand what the hell Jack's talking about, but he is slowly starting to piece together that perhaps the general unease he's been feeling is for a reason.

"Right." He's just going to gloss over all that. Frankly, it sounds like more of a headache to unravel than it's worth. Instead, he points at himself.

"Laszlo Cravensworth."

Mutations in a subset of humanity who develop supernatural gifts as an evolutionary trait. In my time it was still developing in a small percentage of people across the planet, but the number grows with each year.

[ Mutants are public knowledge in his world ever since the fight between him, Erik, Raven, and Hank was filmed and placed everywhere on television. Followed up by Erik's very dramatic stadium statement while attempting to assassinate the president. So their existence is not a secret anymore, something that Charles is still getting used to. It's his preference, he believes that the only way forward is by harmony, but only in a certain way.

Now he's not in that world so frankly, it might not matter in the least. He's touched enough vague minds of the people here to know the idea of supernatural entities is not that surprising. ]

I left the lab to create a school for those people and work together toward a safer world for us and everyone else. Although being here does put a damper on that idea.

[Sunny's eyes land on the gun, and he jumps a little, dropping a few of the bills. A few silent second pass, Sunny staring, but it becomes clear Sam doesn't plan on using the weapon. Sunny bends down to start gathering up the lost bills. When he straightens up again, he doesn't quite make it all the way, shoulders hunched. Sam's offer is...

[...better than nothing, or at least by most people's standards. Sunny ought to accept, climb into the backseat, cover himself with a blanket, and just suffer through the dark, but...

[Balling the money up in his fist, he reaches out for the car nearest him (his still being parked outside) and taps on the headlight, then points to where the inside lights ought to be too. Too dark. What will keep the monsters away?]

[ Eliot nods along, because he knows all about transferable skills and what it means to hand a man a knife and have him do something good with it. He's the goddamn poster child for it after all. ]

What, you're not ready to give up on the birdwatching yet? Brave new world we're in here— [ well. dangerous or maybe weird as hell would be more accurate but it don't quite roll off the tongue as nicely ] —maybe it's time for something new.

[ And then he realises he's been sitting here giving life advice to some kid and he hasn't even introduced himself. ] I'm Eliot, by the way. Eliot Spencer.

[ Hey, you’re looking at the Hawkins Run Away Champ of 1986. He’s no slowpoke himself, but as he casts another glance around, it’s clear that there’s no reason to put his legs to work. No one is watching, and if anyone caught their little illegal exchange, no one cares. ]

Oh, I am. For a small fee of anything in your pockets, I’ll mercilessly critique your music taste

[ He grins ear to ear, and picks up another CD to observe it. It’s absolutely nothing he’s ever heard in his life. ]

But, uh, gonna be straight with you, my music window kind of taps out at 1986.

[Usopp opens his mouth. Closes it. Crosses his arms. Yes? Yes. He's talking to a little deer-person. A crewmate who happens to be a small hybrid and a cute little blue-button nose. And wearing a cute little hat. He supposes he shouldn't be shocked by it when he's already went toe to toe with fishmen, but...!]

Is that, like... a normal thing where you're from? I mean, since we're crewmates, I should definitely know more about you! How do your hooves work? Do you just pick up anything, no problem?

And is that a rude thing to ask someone who's a talking reindeer?

[Oh, right. Privacy wouldn't hurt — and he even refrains from yelling out at the others at the food stall to never fear, the Great Captain Usopp will return to regale his incredible adventures across the sea! See, he knows how to restrain himself. Sometimes. He quickly wanders after Zoro before keeping in pace.]

I mean, it kinda still hurts. But you know, I can handle it.

[Translation: I'm gonna pull a Zoro and shrug it off, even though I'm Usopp and I don't want to shrug it off. He touches the back of his head, where the bandage is hidden under his bandana.]

Uh. You didn't see how I got this, right?

[Because boy. That would be a little embarrassing.

... Falling overboard on a clear sunny day is really embarrassing, actually.]

[ Megumi doesn't actually know how to make friends with no trauma involved, all things considered.

It's kind of impressive, though, that even having so much more to be completely gobsmacked by, that she's found the good things here much faster than he has. Or, at least, seen some of the good in the people.

...the rain. Right. He hadn't been thinking much about the drive back until now. ]

Not too far from here, yes. But it's a motorcycle, so I might just find somewhere to wait the storm out.

[ Not that riding back now would get him any wetter, he supposes, but it's still not much fun and he's still new enough to it that he doesn't really like tangling with rain-slick streets on top of everything else.

And not that there's much in the way of shelter, either, aside from the building that they just worked so hard to get the hell away from, but he can manage. Summon Nue, duck under his wings for a while, probably. That should work. ]

Normal? Uh, sort of? I know I'm not the only one who ate one of the Devil Fruits? Luffy had one too. I can transform to have hands so I can pick things up better if I really have to.

[But uh. Even just his Brain Point form is probably. A lot. Poor Usopp. Still, Chopper tries to focus on the questions, trying not to dwell on this and get too upset in front of the other. He just can't help fretting, checking Usopp over for any other injuries or if it is just his head that was knocked.]

[ Adrian raises a hand to shield himself a bit too late. His glasses are less than useless at the moment, dripping with dark water and hanging on a delicate chain around his neck, but he can make out the shape of his rescuer just fine, even in the minimal light.

Relief washes through him, quickly replaced by an understanding of the urgency in his tone. Anything Adrian might want to say or do is abruptly postponed. When the hand reaches for his shoulder, he flinches back away, instinctive. ]

I'm fine. [ As in, he doesn't need assistance to walk. Probably. There's a touch of apology in his tone, but he knows they don't have time for explanations. ] Your vehicle or mine? If something is out here—

[ He's cut off by an attempt to quell his own coughing, but he thinks the gist of it should be obvious. A car or van can be retrieved when the sun is up again. It's better to travel together if something is hunting them, rather than being isolated when it comes. And if it means he can get a look at that arm when they're out of danger, then all the better. ]

It's a struggle, getting the tire out and over where it needs to be. Nadine's cracked ribs protest at the efforts, and she stifles down a groan of pain as she bends to roll it around the car.

"Nadine," she responds absently as she lets the tired tip onto its side on the ground. She'll have to replace the spare now. Just something else to add to the list of things she needs to get done as soon as she can.

But for now, just getting her vehicle back on the road is the top priority.

"I promise I'm not an idiot about road safety, I just...had too many other things on my mind getting out of there."

[ He huffs around the lip of his bottle. ] I wouldn't go that far.

[ Nah, he's nobody teacher. Though they never did stop tryna make him sub and babysit—before it all went to shit.

Logan flips the jagged metal cap, then turns it back the other way. Part of him wants to say it was their choice; the other part of him understands it's nowhere near that simple. Truth is, he doesn't know Scott well, much less what Scott might've wanted for himself or didn't want. Never got the chance to. And now? Beats the hell out of him, where it leaves them. Logan knows what choice he made, but he's different. He's not—y'know, he's good at what he's good at. That'll never change. ]

Lot of us did it so others wouldn't have to. The kids still got to be kids. For a while.

[ Not as much as they deserved, but he thinks—no, he's sure—that without Charles, they wouldn't have gotten that chance in the first place.

A beat passes. Then he gathers up the empty wrapper and chucks it into the trash. He's got Charles here, safe. It's something. It's more than he thought he'd have.

He's also gotta get to work, so. They're gonna have to revisit this little talk another time. Logan slides off his chair. ]
Take the bed, I won't be back 'til sunup. If you need me, just— [ he wiggles his hand by his head. ] —do your thing. Or call me.

[ Whichever works. ]
