TEST DRIVE ∞ May 2025

Test Drive ∞ May 2025
The First Collision
©
Jump ⇅ :: ArrivalPanoramaFringesInvite Request
The Diadem is an invite-only panfandom game set in a retro-futuristic world where uprooted souls find themselves deep within an eerie wasteland of roads and highways frequently assailed by cosmic storms. Three united strongholds keep the population. Its capital is Panorama, a large metropolis at the planet's center.

Soon, you realize you aren't alone. Calling themselves fluxdrifts, the "locals" have similar stories to you, either for themselves or their ancestry. You speak to an old woman who claims she hailed from another star. You meet a young man who says his great-great-grandfather knew a strange language everybody spoke "back home." As you explore, you stumble across a coin you recognize or your sister's locket. How did it get here? What does this mean? That's for you to discover.

But first, you need to find a ride.

No invites needed to play on the TDM. Everyone's welcome! Use the Invite Request thread below to request an invite from another player.

∞ Summary ∞
IC-wise, arrivals are scattered throughout the month. Events described on the TDM are also ongoing throughout the month. If you'd rather jump right into the action, you're free to begin in media res with your character having already been on the planet for several days.

Post-impact, characters will wake up in a med tent by the Scrapyard. From there, they must accept a vehicle on loan and make the 2-hour drive to the nearest city, Panorama. If they refuse the car because they don't want the loan, they'll be in debt for medical bills instead...so just take the car. It'll come in handy.

Some things to keep in mind when bringing in your character:

  • Pick an injury. At minimum, they got knocked out; at most, whatever they can recover from. Medicine is decently advanced so they'll heal faster if not painlessly.
  • Decide items kept. Reasonable items on their person only: photos, keys, clothes, costumes. No pets or animal companions. Wildly out-of-place tech and personal cell phones will be damaged beyond repair.
  • Select a weapon. Do this only if eligible. Guidelines about weapons and powers are on the FAQ.
  • Choose a vehicle. Decide whether your character gets 2-3 options or if they're stuck with something they hate. Players can pick directly from our collection or source their own images. Anything under a similar aesthetic will work. If your character needs accommodations for driving, they can have them. Ask us for details.
  • Get a phone. Characters have to obtain a phone (and a SIM card) themselves. If they've got one from home, it's damaged beyond repair. Phones are cheap. It'll only take a couple of weeks to afford one. You need to know the number before you text or call anyone. Read about phones and the Forum before you hop on it.

TDM threads can be canon if characters are accepted. Top-levels made to the TDM should be open to all.

Arrival & Introduction
Date: Throughout May
You've tumbled over a cliff. You were fighting for your life. You're on the cusp of death. You slipped in the shower. Whatever the catalyst, you struggle to cling to consciousness. As darkness overtakes you, a swirling vortex warps light and shadow in a way that defies all physics. A dark wail etches into your very bones. You couldn't describe it if you tried. You can barely comprehend what it is.

Then you open your eyes.

Through the figure's mask ©, you swear the face is grinning down at you. The tent you're in smells of antiseptic, and scratchy blankets line your cot. Injuries you've sustained have been bandaged. In the corner, you spot a MedBot that's fixed you up. Depending on the extent of your injuries, the doctor on duty might give you some painkillers before you go. Thankfully, your belongings are by the exit. Sorry if anything's damaged. Your landing was pretty rough.

You follow the figure outside. They are Yom Crook, here to lend a hand to fellow fluxdrifts like yourself. Their car's parked beside them. Actually, there are lots of cars around, but Yom Crook's stands out with its painted shark mouth. They explain they found you, unconscious, in a diffusion zone and brought you here. The nearest city is a 2-hour drive northeast. Forget about walking. You'll never make it. Also, you owe the doctor a lot of money for patching you up. But you're in luck: they've got some wheels for you and if you accept the vehicle on loan, Yom Crook will cover your medical bills. That's a good deal, right? It's not the shiniest car or motorcycle, but it'll do. If fortune favors, you'll get to choose between two or three options. Plus, if you need accommodations to drive—like adjustments to your seat height or modified controls—you'll receive all that for free.

Take the vehicle. (And the loan.) Yom Crook assures you that you'll have six months before collectors come around. Any time you're ready to pay a part of it down, return here to the Scrapyard. You'll get a receipt and everything. Paying off the loan in six months isn't impossible, but it will take a lot of work. Just don't get too lax. There's a good chance you'll be juggling multiple loans as you try to get by.

You either know how to drive, or you'll have a bare-bones manual to get you started. Road rules are more a suggestion than enforced, so just hit the pedal and go. The car has some basic features. The built-in compass will help you navigate.

OPTIONAL PROMPTS: a flat tire; a body on the road (is it a trap?); a fender bender

Panorama
Explore & Settle In
Conditions: Warm spring temperatures, light showers
After 2 hours on the road, you find civilization. The largest of the strongholds, Panorama is where the economy thrives. Massive power plants glowing red make it visible from a distance. The city is divided into three districts. For now, you can access the Pavilion and the Blocks. Don't worry about the Sanctum; they're not letting you in.

You only need to know two things about Panorama: 1) it's big, the size of a modern metropolis, and you'll need your car to get around; 2) anything goes as long as you don't pick a fight with the wrong person. Street smarts will get you far. Despite its geographical size, the population isn't huge. With roughly a million people in a city designed for over twice that number, Panorama is far from deserted, but nor is it overcrowded. It's a good thing. Resources are limited as it is.
The Pavilion: Free Samples
©
Like any large city, Panorama features a couple of supermarkets. The stock's not as consistent as a proper supermarket. On occasion, shelves can remain cleaned out for a week or two. Regardless, the long tradition of free samples remains. If you're not already shopping, you'll notice the crowded parking lot and clusters of lines inside.

Try samples, push through the crowds as you shop, or give yourself a five-finger discount. If you're cautious, you can pocket a few small items without consequences. The Pavillion doesn't have the infrastructure for surveillance; unless someone sees you, you won't be caught. Steal from the store or pilfer someone's wallet. Maybe you even make a new friend if you bump into another fluxdrift. Or, start a fight with somebody who cut you off in the cheese line. Don't make too much of a ruckus, or you'll be thrown out.

As you look around, you'll see posters advertising temporary positions for the cash register or graveyard shifts in the warehouse. Seems they might've lost several employees recently (how'd that happen?), which is good for you! It's just a 6-week position, but it'll get you on your feet. The city has temporary positions like this all over. Permanent ones are harder to come by when you're new.
Samples include: steamed cabbage dumplings, synthetic cherry juice, cheddar cheese, and chocolate-covered alien eggs (it's crunchy and weirdly tasty). They're served in the usual throwaway paper cups with little toothpicks.
The Blocks: Power Outage
©
Power's finicky in Panorama, especially in the Blocks. Saint Margery's Hospital, located in the same area, has priority for power so the first to go are the motels. Maybe you've been in your room for a couple of weeks, maybe you just got here—and by the way, every motel desk is happy to put the fee on your tab if you don't have the money upfront—but all the motels on the east side are in a blackout, leaving only the west side motels up and running.

What do you do? You have three choices:

  • Risk leaving your room and head to the other side where there's power. Knock on some doors and negotiate with another to share the room. They might shut the door in your face, ask for a favor in return, or be nice enough to help you with no strings attached. There's no guarantee your unattended room will be untouched, though, and you'll be on the hook for any damages an intruder causes.
  • Sit in the dark and deal. It's not the worst idea, but the TV's down, the vending machines are powered down, and with the entire place plunged into darkness, you risk getting robbed. If you struggle with defending yourself, you might want to find some trustworthy company. You can also sneak out of there and let them take your leftover pizza. It's not like you've got a ton of valuables, right? Plus, clobbering someone in the face with a frying pan sounds great until you realize you've gotta do something with the body. And what if this person's got a friend waiting?
  • Get in your car and drive (or grab a friend for a road trip). If you scroll the Forum, you might notice reports on diffusion zones southward. Besides, these motels are hardly your forever home. The city can only provide so much. Why not go for a ride and see what you can find out there?

OPTIONAL PROMPTS: clean up on aisle 3 (what is that goo?); a knock at your door but no one's there; you hear screaming or a commotion down the hall

The Fringes
Quad 3: Lockdown
Conditions: Stormy, with flooding roads
Felix Bjurstrom
> Date: 125-05-17
> Time: 02:15:57

> Emergency road lights have been reported in Quadrant 3! Please, can someone go see what's there? When last we chasers investigated emergency lights, a whole truck filled with sour candy had tipped over. Our stores were stocked for weeks! Oh, be careful - reception looks bad in that zone.
Whether you end up here on your own or you were following a tip on the Forum, the outcome is the same: you come to a stop in front of a 2-story office building that's flooded several inches deep. Emergency lights from a roadblock flicker through the stormy night. Stepping out of your car, you're soaked within seconds. When you check your phone, you don't have any bars. No calls in or out.

Through the open windows, a computer awakens and displays a cheerful smile. The lights inside switch on.

Pick your scenario role below. Your thread partner doesn't need to take the opposite role! They can join you in the same scenario (i.e. trapped together). Players are also free to create a generic NPC for the other side to facilitate the thread.

After characters escape, they'll find one bottle of antibiotics in their pocket or car, whether they remember taking it or not.

A: Sealed In
As you peer through the windows, you see crates of medicine floating around. Antibiotics in the diadem are valuable. Hospitals and doctors are always buying. You can keep it for yourself or make a quick buck. Or maybe you're compelled to help somebody back in the city who's in need. Whatever the reason, you decide to take the risk and step inside.

Water splashes around your ankles. The lock buzzes behind you. If you try to break the windows, you discover they're unnaturally resistant to shattering. With the whole place locked tight, the water begins to churn. Then the computer lights up again.

Warning, it flashes in large, bold text. Quarantine in progress. Release code required for exit.
  • To find the code, you'll have to search. Duck under the water, go through sopping envelopes and sticky notes or pick the locks on the filing cabinets and desk drawers. You can also try hacking the computers. Use your computer knowledge or fall back on the age-old trick of seeing who wrote down their password.
  • The files, notepads, and emails start innocuous, but as you look through them, disturbing phrases jump out at you—a dark thought you've had or a cruel taunt from someone in your past. The longer you're fixed on the terrible words, the higher the water begins to rise. Only another can break you out of your trance.
  • With the rising water comes fear. And the more you're afraid, the more the water also rises. You begin to see faces in the water, bobbing like balloon heads. Do you recognize them? If you move to take a closer look, they will sink back beneath the surface as if never there.
  • If you manage to swallow your panic, you can eventually find a triple-laminated binder with the release code and instructions. Bad news: you need someone on the outside to punch in the 6 strange symbols in order. The instructions explain that the code panel is located at the back of the building.
Let's hope a friendly face comes along.

B: Set Free
As you peer through the windows, you see not just the crates of medicine but someone trapped inside. They look like they might be in trouble, and from your vantage point, you notice that the water is bubbling strangely. It's definitely not normal rainwater. As you watch, the water rises unnaturally, stopping and starting. It's as if the water level is responding to an external stimulus.
  • The glass is soundproof. You can't hear what the person inside is saying, so you'll have to communicate with each other another way. Try charades, typing on your phone, or whatever you think of. Eventually, you determine that they're stuck and that you need to enter some sort of code onto a pad located—according to your trapped partner—at the back of the building.
  • Around the back, shadows swallow your surroundings. The panel must be pried open, but a slippery substance makes it hard to get a good grip. Each time the substance touches you, you grow uneasy. You swear you see eyes watching you, though when you turn around, nothing's there.
  • You can't seem to keep the instructions in your mind. And those symbols...they burn into your retinas. Through them, you glimpse an incomprehensibly massive figure unfurling in the darkness, pulsing as if in a deep sleep. When you snap back to reality, you realize you've injured yourself, slicing your hand on a sharp edge or a bruise you can't remember getting.
  • Once you manage to release the doors, the water inside the office drains upward into the sky as though sucked out by a giant hose. The darkness spreads. Get out of there fast before the shadows drag you or your partner into the void.
Of course, you don't have to help anyone. You can leave the individual there, make a deal, or outright extort them. But remember, you're not the only person on these roads. You might want to play your cards carefully, even if altruism isn't your first instinct.

This is just about the last thing Foggy expect out of the darkness, and yet he has no issue enclosing his arms fully around Karen and holding on tight. The last time he'd seen her— Foggy swallows against the thought, pressing aside the emotions. He's okay now and from the feel of it, Karen is alive and fully vital herself.

"Is it really you?" His voice is shot through with emotion, crackling in his throat as he presses his face into her hair and closes his eyes tight. She feels right, like one of the very people he's been missing dearly, and it's hard to give up that hope. Instead, he leans into it and accepts this moment for what it is. "God, talk about some good luck. Have you been here this whole time?"

When he pulls away, he doesn't let go, only holding her at arms length and trying desperately to squint at her in the darkness. Just to see a glimpse of her would feel like a miracle on top of a miracle.

"I-I just got here," Foggy quickly explains. "I mean, I moved in not long ago and I've been working at a deli to pay off my debt, but—" He huffs and pulls her right back into a bearhug. "This is all so crazy..."

Down the hall, Karen's friendly neighbor appears in her doorway with a short pillar candle flickering behind her shielding hand. She waves them closer, offering the light source for their use.

Yeah, well. [ Logan tosses the keys on the table. ] I travelled back fifty years, I can walk across the street.

[ A bother is the last thing the Professor ever is to him. Except when the man is being a pain in the ass, but that's not right now (yet). Besides, Charles has already looked into his head, knows a lot more about him than even he does, and it means he doesn't mind as much, the way people always see a little too much when they spend more than a night with him. When he's asleep and his walls crumble.

He squats by the mini-fridge and starts digging through it, coming up with one of those boxed sandwiches from the corner store and a semi-flat Coke. What? This is the best he's got, so. He slides it across the table toward Charles. For a second, he pauses. He doesn't usually say this sort of thing, often keeps it locked down tight, but. The years have been long. Real long. And as much as Charles hasn't lived through it, he knows the man's seen it. Seen it, felt it, understood it in a way that only Charles ever could. Through the eyes of another. Through his own eyes decades down the line. ]

Listen, Charles, you were the last person I wanted to see. [ Wait, he's not finished. ] 'Cause we needed you back home, keeping everybody together, and if I found you, it'd mean the plan failed. [ It means he failed. ] But you are here, and, uh, I dunno. I guess I'm glad it's you.

[ He is. He doesn't like what it implies—all the things that must've gotten twisted for them to end up kicked wildly off course—but the truth is, another part of him feels better with the Professor by his side, too. And yeah, he's well aware it doesn't go both ways. At least, that's what he figures. Charles has others he's closer with. More responsible. Easier to manage. All those things Logan isn't. Still, though. ]

Yes, free is definitely always better.

[ Not that she ever really worries about the cost of things, given that her line of work has always paid well. ]

So, you've had alien before? Are you... ehhh...

[ She gestures skywards, like that is any hint of what she's trying to say. It's more like she's trying to remember what words go in what order, which can sometimes be a problem for Yelena. ]

[ They most likely do get looks, but Fern is used to that and doesn't pay it any mind. It's possible that she won't be allowed back in there if they're truly bothered by her appearance, but then she'll simply find another store. Usually there will at least be one or two merchants in any town or city-state willing to trade to shifters.

Though she'd almost forgotten what it was like to earn those looks, shielded as she'd been after traveling with two nobles for so long. That, and people in Barovia hadn't seemed to care what she was so long as it wasn't a werewolf.

She shakes that all off as they make it outside, where there's at least a mild breeze to cool her down after being in that store, packed in by bodies. She turns to the man as he suggests they sit, then nods toward the curb.

She seems perfectly content to just sit on the ground. ]

This should do.

[ What Gustav misses is the several minutes that Cassian spends staring up at the ceiling of his car in an attempt to gather his will to live while simultaneously trying to calculate in his mind how long it would take him to walk back to Yom Crook's and how much it would cost to get a spare.

By the time Gustav catches up, he's rooting around in his trunk in search of a toolkit or anything remotely close to one. Sort of hard to do however when there's a surprising amount of clothing left in here from the previous owner. He glances up from the trunk to the newcomer letting out a sigh before going back to root in the trunk. ]

Not in trouble. Just annoyed. [ And as for the very obvious observation. ] It feels a little like a metaphor for my life lately.

"You know how payday is," Foggy responds back, cheerier than he has any right to be. His smile for each customer is genuine, but when he can finally turn his attention directly to his new friend, the same smile turns warm and fond. "But you know your joolies are only so good here."

Like most people, Foggy is struggling to pay back his own debt. His job at the delicatessen is temporary — this much he knows — and while it affords him easy access to samples, it's main perk is Foggy's ability to gently tilt the scales in favor of those who need a little break from the grind.

He's been anticipating Wanda's return and in doing so, he's managed to set aside a small item he'd traded up for. The item, a can of peaches in syrup, goes right into Wanda's bag with a little paid sticker from the deli marking it in case she runs into trouble at checkout. "Are you looking for something special, Wanda? We've got some chicken feet in that I hear makes decent soup stock," he says, offering the bag over with a subtle wink and a tap on his nose. Their little secret.

[He offers the cigarettes to her first, despite how desperately his newly-reacquainted system is screaming for one. He's trying. And maybe if she's smoking she won't cry, he doesn't think he can handle seeing her cry.]

[ Hey, don’t judge him too quickly. Eddie’s tenth birthday gift from his father was a hot-wiring lesson, a time-honored Munson coming of age tradition. It’s not a skill he’s proud of, but he’d be lying if he said it hadn’t come in handy. Before that, he’d already been behind the wheel more than once—not exactly legal, but in a small town in Indiana, no one was really going to bat an eye unless it became a problem.

Eddie has already come across another traveller who had never been behind the wheel before, and he’s quickly beginning to realize that the guy at the scrapyard really didn’t vet…anyone beforehand. He’s not terribly surprised, but his eyebrows knit together when Arthur mentions that there are no cars at all where he comes from. Does England just not use cars? There is always only so much someone can take before they take matters into their own hands.

[ With a different context behind it than the current discussion, Sunday knows that applies to him just as much. Perhaps he would not have done what he did if things were different, or maybe he would have regardless. That there is visible struggle here puts a distinct weight on his shoulders even if they bear no responsibility for it - another case of misery and bliss, no matter where one goes. It's a good distraction from such things when he's (correctly) questioned and that means an opportunity to send another sidelong look in the other's direction. ]

If I did not then that would be rather foolish, and I hope--

[ Whatever remark he was about to finish about the same being true in return is forgotten when very surprisingly, sound travels both ways along the hallway and their conversation has carried. Sunday's still mid-sentence when a door opens and two men emerge to glare at them. What, do you think you're gonna barge in? one of them all but snarls and Sunday returns their gaze rather serenely. ]

I would advise you to reconsider.

[ The shadow's are definitely closing in them; it's oppressive, all encompassing. Wrong in the sense that it never seems to quite overtake where they're looking, just the peripherals of their vision. It is getting closer and closer, though, if either of them have the wherewithal to pay attention.

Lucina definitely doesn't. But Megumi tugging her hand seems to knock her out of whatever trance took over for a moment. Another shake of her head before her eyes focus, and the overwhelming green seems to ebb away just enough for her to follow. ]
Right.

... Something's wrong here. [ Understatement of the century. But they've managed to pick up speed enough that they can put the rising water and the weird shadows behind them for now ( maybe? ). She spares a glance back — everything's still as insane as ever — before she manages to start jogging alongside him properly. ] The symbols you found... did you notice anything strange about them?

[ Kat you're making me ask the real questions. Does Ylisse have chameleons... For the sake of this thread I'm saying yes.

She has no idea what a Ghalmanian is though; not that it's going to stop her from taking the comment seriously, filing the thought away for later. For what? Who knows. It's been told to her, so she's going to do her best not to forget about it. ]

The tail? I can't say I've ever eaten the tail of a creature... [ Her head tilts to the side, eyes wandering upwards — as if she's trying to imagine it. ] What does it taste like?

[ There's a little frown at the bloody nose, concern flitting her expression for a moment — but he doesn't seem bothered by it, so she doesn't ask. It doesn't look broken, which is enough. It's something they can circle back to later if given the opportunity.

So he beelines for the bathroom, and she stays out on the hallway for a moment to from one end of the hallway to another ( unsheathe her sword in the process, before her form relaxes and her shoulders straighten out again ). It's still quiet — almost disconcertingly so — despite all the commotion that was raised. She hauls the limp body back into the room before returning back inside and shutting the door behind her. Blocking the light from the hallway makes the entire room a shade darker, but the curtains are drawn back and it feels — well, it feels safer like this. One more barrier in case anyone tries to bolt that shouldn't.

Lucina's coming up behind him as she hears a whimper and the rustling of fabric — it really is dark, she can barely make out the shape of the body inside except for the lines, but it does seem to be nodding. Frantically. Y-yeah, to Marc, voice tight and a little frantic. Yeah. I— the power went out but I was sleeping but they got in somehow and— ]

You're alright. [ From just beyond the doorway. The bathroom's already crowded with two, she really doesn't need to be a third — but she tries for a smile in the hopes that they can see. Puts on a voice that sounds less like a fighter and more like an authority figure, reassuring and comforting in a way that offers no room for argument. ] We'll make sure of it.

... Though perhaps you should consider finding arrangements elsewhere. [ Not that she expects everyone to have that kind of luxury ( she's sleeping in a car as her 'alternative', she's in no place to talk ). But ... you know, just an option. ]

[ Truly, who could have put her here.

It's fine, probably. She's nothing if not resilient. Hopeful, almost stupidly so, despite how the circumstances may stack up against her. If she couldn't get the tire fixed, she really would have made to Panorama on foot. Figured something out once she got there. It just would have been ... harder.

Fortunately! It won't come to that, probably. ]
Oh, I do recall Yom Crook mentioning something about this 'spare' in the trunk. [ But Yom Crook is also a very busy man who doesn't really have the time to explain to a ye olde what the hell a 'spare' is, so she honestly forgot about it until just now.

It's been a trying few hours. ]
Er, just a moment—

[ She digs around her pockets, heading to the back to slot the key in and turn it. And ... yep, there's a tire. ] ... Well, I suppose this solves one of my problems. [ The second being she has no idea how to put this on. But it at least gets her somewhere. ]

[ To anyone who knows Cassian, it should come as very little surprise that the minute 'medicine' and 'help' were in the same message on the Forum that he would be unable to help himself from venturing out to find it. Is this place lawless and cutthroat with everyone looking out for themselves? Yes. But that doesn't mean that he can simply turn a blind eye to anyone in need. The thought of someone in need of their medicine tugs at the wound in his heart that has never healed which is exactly how he finds himself here.

When he manages to make his way into the facilities he's drenched, but it doesn't take him long, not with determination, a little luck - and the distinct sound of frantic pounding. Drawing his blaster he rounds the corner a little more cautiously than before only to immediately making eye contact with the source of the sound: a wide-eyed woman holding something up to the glass.

A quick scan of the hall confirms there's no other soul waiting to ambush him and that's enough for him to holster is blaster and rush forward. It doesn't take him long to decipher what has to be done and that yelling is't going to do anything to serve them. Eyes dart from her in what he hopes is reassuringly before back towards the binder, missing the way the water seems to still and stare. As he mutters under his breath to himself the sequence of abstract lines and shapes there is one more thing that he needs to try and confirm.

What's the likelihood that she knows sign language? Slim; it wasn't common either and varied across the galaxy and he doesn't have time to figure out whether she does or not. Instead he whips out his phone quickly typing: ]

[ A familiar face is dead last on the list of things Yelena expects from this little traffic stop, but it is a bizarrely welcome thing. She's halfway out of the cab of her truck when John steps from the woods, which does cause her to jerk her arm up and aim her widow's bite, but she's quick to disengage when she sees who emerges. ]

Walker?

[ She's somehow both aggravated and profoundly relieved to see him. Probably not the first time he's elicited that emotion from a woman. ]

I feel I should be less surprised to find you in a ditch on the side of the road. Yet here we are.

No, but it doesn't take a mind reader to reach that conclusion.

[ The future Logan told him about was devastating and that was on the side of the X-Men who at least were still together. Experiencing that while also being alone is a different situation. Charles has no way of knowing if their actions truly helped stop that future, and so hoping that she gets a respite from it here is natural. It's lucky that they came upon each other like this. He doesn't know if he would say coincidence. Whatever brought them here could have targeted mutants connected to each other. ]

Yes, Raven is a shapeshifter. They used her DNA to modify the sentinels to mirror her abilities.

[ Charles is a scientist and he is good with technology, but only from a 70s well of understanding. Technology like that is far beyond him. Hank had a better sense of it than he did. But he does understand mutant abilities very well, and Raven's is one he has been used to since they were both children. He knows how they work and how it could be put into a machine in the most violent of ways. It all made sense.

His eyebrows go up at that admission and he nods. ]

I was going to ask what your gift was.

[ Charles finds all mutations fascinating, it's been his focus of study and passion since before he knew the mutants existed everywhere in the world. It was all theoretical, once. It's wonderful to think of how much larger that will be someday, of how full his school was in the future he witnessed. An ability to take the powers of others is interesting. ]

And you can use theirs as your own?

[They give a nod of solidarity at the comment about this not being the night she had planned, taking the lighter back and tucking it back in the cigarette tin.]

Least you thought to get candles. Don't know why I didn't think of that.

[Between living in a house with shoddy wiring and parents who occasionally forgot to pay the electric, Keni was used to blackouts. They should have at least considered getting candles, just in case. But they'd been low on their list of priorities. If the blackout lasts through the night, though, they really should stock up on supplies for it tomorrow.

Lightly kicking their legs in the empty pool, they take a slow drag on their cigarette, trying to savor it, only to choke and cough at a sudden burst of commotion further down the motel stretch.

A hulking figure had gotten pushed out the door of one of the rooms, only to turn around and bang against the door. An argument starts up between him and the occupant, and Keni can't help but curl in on themselves a little. Trying to ignore the noise, they bring their cigarette back to their lips again, attempting to act calm, despite the slight tremble in their hand.

After exhaling smoke out the side of their mouth, away from Nadine, they let out a sour, nervous chuckle.
]

Guess our night could always be worse. Looks like that dude's gonna be spending the night in his car.

[At least, they hoped that's all it was gonna come to.]

[ There's a blink from Sunday as he processes this as all of it is a curiosity. Less to that there's a possibility sweets are uncommon as he's heard as much from visitors to Penacony amazed by the selection of ones available - something he'd taken for granted having grown up with having there.

This particular dessert while mainly unexpected reminded him a bit of something a vendor might propose as one of the many options. Maybe not the egg portion since he's less used to that in how they're having it here than in the components of some of his favorite tarts, but his expression brights (just a little, and barely) a second later. ]

Oh, then you must try something else I found if you liked these. There's an aisle nearby of even more chocolate items, and most of them rather affordably priced.

[ He thinks, anyway, relative to figuring out money and how to budget it (poorly). That statement's accurate only in the sense he's been able to buy a few things to try over the past few days and possibly at the expense of other... well, expenses. But this was clearly important! ]

None of which are familiar to me either, though it reminds me of when my sister used to send me things to try. She always made sure to include a couple of chocolate items like these.
