and yes it was a whole thing. long story short they tried to fight off some hags who were eating children (yikes) but were in way over their heads, so to not die they had to give up various non-material things. fern lost her hope! which is kind of an interesting thing to play around with in a game where i didn't want her to just give up at every turn, but i try to work it in where i can. she basically just never expects anything to really work out, which to her credit is normally how things go in barovia, lmfao.
